Forgetting your Facebook password is frustrating on its own. But it gets even scarier when you realize that you may also need your Facebook account to log into other services. But fear not, as there are a few different ways you can reset your forgotten password. If you have the same email or phone number that you registered with, it won’t take long. However, some of them will only work if you prepared for this beforehand.

How to reset your password on Facebook?

There are a few methods you can try if you have forgotten your Facebook password. The most straightforward one is to use a recovery code, but you must have access to the email account you used when you signed up for Facebook:

1. First, go to Facebook’s login page.

2. Try to log in with the last password you remember using.

3. If it’s incorrect, Google will send a recovery code to the email address associated with your account. Use it to log into your account.

What to do if you no longer have access to the email address you signed up with? You can still recover your Facebook account through a backup email address or phone number. It will also work if you’ve linked Facebook with your Google account. Here’s how it works:

1. Go to Facebook’s login page.

2. Click on Forgot account?

3. Select a method for resetting your password: Google account, backup email address, or phone number. Click Continue and follow the instructions to reset your password.

If you can’t access any of those either, you can use your trusted contacts to recover your account. However, it only works if you have selected your trusted contacts beforehand:

1. Go to Facebook’s login page.

2. Click on Forgot account?

3. In the next window, select No longer have access to these?

4. Enter a new email address or phone number you want to use.

5. Ask your trusted contacts to visit https://www.facebook.com/recover and give you the recovery codes.

6. Enter the codes, click Continue, and follow the instructions to reset your account.

If you can neither access the email account that you used when signing up for Facebook nor have set up a backup email, phone number, and emergency contacts, then, unfortunately, you won’t be able to log into your Facebook account. There is no way to verify that it’s really you trying to regain access to your Facebook.

How to set recovery email, phone number, and emergency contacts?

If you managed to remember your password and log in, it’s best to add additional verification and recovery methods, like a phone number and trusted contacts. You never know when you might forget your password, or someone might try to hack your account – it’s best to have a few different verification methods.

1. Log into your Facebook account, click on the little arrow on the right, and select Settings.

2. In the General tab, select Contact and add a backup email address and your current phone number.

3. Then, select the Security and login tab on the left and scroll down to Setting up extra security. There, you can choose 3 to 5 friends that will help you recover your account if you forget your password in the future.

While you’re at it, you can tweak other security and privacy settings. Set up alerts for unrecognized logins and two-factor authentication if you haven’t already. You can also change the password to something long and complex (you can consult our password strength checker to see if it’s strong enough) and add it to your password manager. This way, you won’t run the risk of losing it in the future.

If you don't know what alternate information you have:

1. Go to facebook.com/login/identify

3. Make sure to use a computer or mobile phone that you have previously used to log into your Facebook account.

• If you signed up for Facebook with your email, contact your email service provider to regain access to the email on your Facebook account. For example, many email service providers have Trouble signing in? option on their sign-in screen.

To change your password on Facebook if you're already logged in:

1. Click in the top-right corner of any Facebook page and select Settings.
2. Click Security and login.
3. Click Edit next to Change password.
4. Click Save Changes.

If you're logged in but have forgotten your password, follow the steps under Change your password, then click Forgot your password? and follow the steps to reset it. Bear in mind that you'll need access to the email associated with your account.

1. Go to the Find your account page

If you're having trouble logging in to Facebook with your mobile number, try these tips:

• Make sure to enter your entire mobile phone number, including the country code
• Leave out any extra zeros, plus signs (+) or other special characters.

2ND METHOD / ANOTHER WAY

• If you have forgotten your email id or user name you used to sign in for your Facebook account. Don’t worry in this case ask your friend to search your name and go to your profile, you can see the username on the URL which is provided by Facebook.

• And if you have made visible your user name, you can see in the ‘About’ session of your friend’s profile.

If you have no access to your email either, signed up with Facebook using a Mailinator, Guerrilla Mail, Maildrop, 10minutemail, etc. email address. It may be hard to recover, but not impossible, in case you have set your friends to be ‘Trusted Contact’.

1. On the Facebook help page, search for ‘How can I reset my Facebook password.

2. Follow the instructions provided by Facebook to use your trusted contacts to get back into your account.

3. You'll get a set of instructions that includes a URL. The URL contains a special security code that can be accessed by your trusted contacts only. Call your trusted friends and give them the URL so that they can open the link and give the security code to you.

4. Use the security codes from your friend's mobile to access your account.

If you don't have already set up your trusted contacts, set up now.

Note that after passing all the security checks, you will have to wait at least 24 hours before you can access your account as an additional precaution.
