Before You Reset: Check Your Browser's Password Manager

Before you reset your password, it's worth checking whether you have it stored on your phone or computer.

Most browsers will prompt you to autosave your passwords when logging into online accounts. So you should check whether your browser saved your Facebook password.

Here's how to check in Chrome on your Android device.

  1. Tap the Chrome menu button and go to Settings > Passwords.
  2. Enter Facebook in the Password search bar, or manually check for Facebook in the list of sites shown.
  3. Tap on Facebook.
  4. Then tap the eye icon.
  5. Unlock with PIN or fingerprint to view your saved password.

If you didn't find your Facebook login details in your saved passwords, you will need to reset your password to regain access to your account.

You can ask Facebook to Remember password so that the next time you log in, you can just click your profile picture instead of typing a password. You could also consider using the best password manager for your device so that you have easy access whether you're using your phone or your PC.

For added security, you can also set up two-factor authentication for Facebook, as well as login alerts, authorized logins, app passwords, and trusted contacts.

Password managers can help you to remember all your passwords, so you never have to forget them again.

Don't Panic If You Forget Your Facebook Password

If you forget your Facebook password, it's not the end of the world. You have multiple options for resetting your password so that you can regain access to your account.

Once you have changed your password, we recommend using a manager to save it so you don't find yourself in the same situation again.

Forgetting your Facebook password is frustrating on its own. But it gets even scarier when you realize that you may also need your Facebook account to log into other services. But fear not, as there are a few different ways you can reset your forgotten password. If you have the same email or phone number that you registered with, it won’t take long. However, some of them will only work if you prepared for this beforehand.

How to reset your password on Facebook?

There are a few methods you can try if you have forgotten your Facebook password. The most straightforward one is to use a recovery code, but you must have access to the email account you used when you signed up for Facebook:

  1. First, go to Facebook’s login page.

  2. Try to log in with the last password you remember using.

  3. If it’s incorrect, Google will send a recovery code to the email address associated with your account. Use it to log into your account.

What to do if you no longer have access to the email address you signed up with? You can still recover your Facebook account through a backup email address or phone number. It will also work if you’ve linked Facebook with your Google account. Here’s how it works:

  1. Go to Facebook’s login page.

  2. Click on Forgot account?

  3. Select a method for resetting your password: Google account, backup email address, or phone number. Click Continue and follow the instructions to reset your password.

If you can’t access any of those either, you can use your trusted contacts to recover your account. However, it only works if you have selected your trusted contacts beforehand:

  1. Go to Facebook’s login page.

  2. Click on Forgot account?

  3. In the next window, select No longer have access to these?

  4. Enter a new email address or phone number you want to use.

  5. Ask your trusted contacts to visit https://www.facebook.com/recover and give you the recovery codes.

  6. Enter the codes, click Continue, and follow the instructions to reset your account.

If you can neither access the email account that you used when signing up for Facebook nor have set up a backup email, phone number, and emergency contacts, then, unfortunately, you won’t be able to log into your Facebook account. There is no way to verify that it’s really you trying to regain access to your Facebook.

How to set recovery email, phone number, and emergency contacts?

If you managed to remember your password and log in, it’s best to add additional verification and recovery methods, like a phone number and trusted contacts. You never know when you might forget your password, or someone might try to hack your account – it’s best to have a few different verification methods.

  1. Log into your Facebook account, click on the little arrow on the right, and select Settings.

  2. In the General tab, select Contact and add a backup email address and your current phone number.

  3. Then, select the Security and login tab on the left and scroll down to Setting up extra security. There, you can choose 3 to 5 friends that will help you recover your account if you forget your password in the future.

While you’re at it, you can tweak other security and privacy settings. Set up alerts for unrecognized logins and two-factor authentication if you haven’t already. You can also change the password to something long and complex (you can consult our password strength checker to see if it’s strong enough) and add it to your password manager. This way, you won’t run the risk of losing it in the future.
