Does nest temperature sensor work with nest thermostat

The Google Nest Temperature Sensor supplements the Nest thermostat to regulate the temperatures in your smart home better. You can place it on a wall or a table, and it’ll take care of everything else. However, there are some things to know about the Nest Temperature Sensor that may change whether you buy it or not.

The Nest Temperature Sensor works as soon as you place it on a wall or shelf. Once you set it up in the Nest app, the sensor will tell your smart thermostat (either the Nest Thermostat E or the 3rd generation Nest Learning Thermostat) what the temperature is in the room where you placed it.

Knowing how the Nest Temperature Sensor works will help you choose strategic places to leave the sensor(s) and better regulate the temperatures in each room of your house, allowing you to have different rooms be different temperatures as well as set priorities for the Nest Thermostat to focus on when adjusting the temperature. This also simultaneously saves you money on your next energy bill and keeps you comfortable no matter what part of the home you’re in.

How Many Sensors Do You Need?

How many Nest Temperature Sensors you’ll want will depend on how many rooms you think might benefit from being at a different temperature. For instance, maybe you want your living room moderately cold from the hours of 4 PM to 9 PM, and your bedroom to get chilly between 9 PM until the morning. In this case, you’ll want to have two sensors (which you can purchase here). All you need to do is tap on a thermostat in the Nest app, and you’ll be able to control which sensor is prioritized at what time.

The Nest Temperature Sensor has four times for you to choose from:

  • Morning: 7 AM to 11 AM
  • Midday: 11 AM to 4 PM
  • Evening: 4 PM to 9 PM
  • Night: 9 PM to 7 AM

(Source: Google Nest Help)

You’ll be able to choose which sensors you want the Nest Thermostat to prioritize during which time; this means that you can have your bedroom sensor prioritized from night to morning and your living room sensor prioritized from midday to evening. These time zones allow you to have some flexibility in how your thermostat maintains the temperatures.

One thing to keep in mind for those interested in purchasing Google Nest Temperature Sensors is that although you can attach up to 6 sensors per thermostat, you won’t be able to set two or more rooms to be different temperatures at the same time (unless you have a zoned system or special vents installed in your home).

What the Sensor does do is let you choose which room in your home will be the priority room and for what time frame, and it will let the thermostat know which sensor to get its readings from at which time.

If you do happen to have a zoned system with multiple thermostats, then you can use up to six Nest Temperature Sensors per thermostat to regulate the temperatures at the same time.

Do You Need to Have a Nest Thermostat for Them to Work?

Before you purchase a new Google Nest Temperature Sensor, you’re going to want to make sure that the thermostat you have at home will be compatible with the sensor.

The Nest Temperature Sensor is only compatible with the Nest Thermostat E or the 3rd generation Nest Learning Thermostat in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The sensor will not work without one of these thermostats.

Each Nest Temperature Sensor reports the temperature data to the Nest Thermostat via Bluetooth, and so buying the sensors without a compatible Nest Thermostat will render your purchase useless. Through the Nest app, you’ll be able to connect however many Temperature Sensors you like (up to 6) to either Nest Thermostat, and from there, you’ll be able to adjust the temperature of different rooms to your liking.

Just place the Nest Temperature Sensor where you want it to monitor the temperature, and the tech will do the rest.

Final Thoughts

For the Google Nest Thermostat ecosystem, the Nest Temperature Sensor offers something more than just a smart thermostat. By allowing you to adjust the temperature in different rooms at different times, you might even be able to save some money. A smaller room can get to a desired temperature faster than a bigger space would, so your central air conditioning unit wouldn’t have to run as long when being prompted by the Nest Thermostat and Nest Temperature Sensor combination.

That said, you will need to already own the Google Nest Thermostat, which can be a high starting point in terms of price. However, the added flexibility and comfort that comes with the Nest Temperature Sensors can be hard to beat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolute must have for two story homes

With so many smart devices out there, it’s tough to figure out which products are actually useful, and can improve the quality of life, vs those that are a waste of money. This product by far is an absolute must, and I’ll attempt to explain.Prior to installing this device I had been experiencing significant temperature differences in my 2story single AC unit home. Days where hot upstairs where the thermostat was located, so the unit ran constantly to keep it cool, while the downstairs was very cold. At night the inverse would happen and the downstairs was very hot and muggy while the upstairs remained cool. I later found out that my ducts where set to send most of the air to the upper level for obvious daytime cooling. When I installed the sensors I immediately had the ability to adjust the daily schedule to perfection. The sensors and Nest allow you to pick which sensor/temp drive the ac cooling, which was amazing. What nailed it for me was the added ability to control the fan in-between cooling cycles. This feature allowed air to be circulated throughout the home, which helped to balance the temperature from the upper to the lower level, taking a 3-5 degree difference, down to 0-1 degree throughout the day. I can’t say enough about how I appreciate this product, and love my Nest even that much more. I hope this review help other families out there save some money and enjoy their home that much more!

Like many homeowners, I suffer from "This room is too hot/cold, but my thermostat is in the other room". I recently installed Google Nest Thermostats to help add more smarts to keeping my home comfortable, but these Google Nest Sensors really polish off the whole system perfectly.

The way it works, is you can place the sensors in rooms you want to be able to individually monitor for temperature. You can configure your Google nest to link with these sensors, and then change how the sensors are used throughout the day. So in the morning you can say "Watch Sensor 1", and during that time the temperature from that sensor is used to fed the thermostat to heat/cool until it's satisfied. In my case, I have a home office I use during the day, and the Living room (where the thermostat is) at night. So the temperature, wherever I am, is at the right spot.

The sensor itself is pretty small. Say almost the diameter of a "Gatorade" bottle cap, and about 1" tall. There is a slot on the back to make it dead simple to hang on a wall via screw or nail, as well as rubber back so it can sit on your desk.

Setup and install is dead simple, and the Google Nest app easily walks you through it. The only complaint is more about the Google Nest app. You can tell it what sensor to use during the "Morning, Midday, Evening and Night". Those time ranges are a little vague for me, and I wish I could more specifically setup the hour ranges. But that is totally on the App, and not these sensors.

Overall, great feature to enhance your Google Nest Thermostat.

I got these because the front of the house is hot in the morning and the back of the house is hot at night. The thermostat is in the middle. Now I can control the front temp in the morning and back temperature at night without messing with the thermostat. Right now its 78F in front and 72F in back. Thermostat thinks its 76F. I wish I could push more air to where I need it so all the room are same and same money.

....if you are trying to save money. This is a great tool if you want to see the tempature throughout rooms and your home. You can have nest set the tempature based on the sensor you select. I will try my best to explain. Say you thermostat reads 80 you have 3 placed around you home sensor A reads 80, sensor B 79 and sensor C 84(room the furthest from the AC). You can have your thermostat set to sensor C and you set the temperature to 75. Your AC will run until the sensor at Bedroom C reads 75. That being said it might of taken both other sensors and thermostat 1 hour to reach 75 degrees but it takes your AC 2 hours to reach 75 for sensor C. At the end you are left with Room C at 75. Thermostat and sensor A at 73ish and sensor B 71ish. So these sensors are made for you to be comfortable at which ever room you are or want it to. It's really not to save money. Unless the whole example is backwards you have the ac setting set to read the room that is alot cooler it will help your ac run less buy the other room will more than likely stay warm. I personally bought these to save money but after a few days with them and some research I realized they are made for comfortability.

This seems to be the same hardware as the original Nest version. It was a little quirky to install. It can fail to add to the app on the first try sometimes but works on the second try. One complain: why does Google insists on putting their ugly G on everything and ruining it? :P Seriously, the nest logo looked so much better. Google associates with internet-search in my mind. Let’s face it, the G, no matter if you paint it with funky colors, will never stand for awesome hardware.

They were easy to setup with the app and it's nice to be able to see the temperatures in different rooms and allow the Nest to turn on the A/C based on those temperatures. My Nest is in a hallway with minimal airflow, so it's consistently a few degrees over/under the normally occupied rooms in the house.

Sadly, within the month I got it, one appears to have disconnected per the app and hasn't reported temperature to the Nest since it did. It's not because it's too far away because I moved it closer to the Nest and it still didn't reconnect, but I have another that is farther away and has several walls (at least three at an angle) and other obstructions/RF devices between it and the Nest and it works fine - it's not a distance issue. The other two have continued to function properly so far and I've had them since August 2021. Maybe it's just that the battery died in less than 30 days? The error it gives isn't very helpful: "Offline for over a day." It's been almost 11 months so far. Someday I'll troubleshoot it more.

The sensors really helped me get a grasp on temp zone in my home with second floor and basement. These were instrumental in getting my temperature control in multi zones with additional vent controllers. Also love that nest can switch to sensor in order to control temp when needed.

Not really much to say about these. I hung it in our bedroom with one of the supplied screws. Our thermostat is located in the hallway and with the bedroom doors closed could not reach the set temperature due to the lack of a vent. This little gem senses the temperature in the master bedroom and prevents the AC from running all night saving us money. Very easy to install and sync, it took less that 5 minutes.

3.0 out of 5 stars Setup issues

Reviewed in Canada on October 1, 2019

TL&DR : barcodes don't work properly because the print is too faded.

I had a lot of trouble trying to make the barcodes work. The print is too dim / grey and the iPhone camera could not read it. I tried multiple devices and no it wasn't only on one sensor. All prints are faced and hard to read.

To top that, the code inside the units doesn't have the proper format and app won't allow you to enter it manually. (yes, My app was up-to-date)

I finally managed to setup by taking pictures from barcodes, changing the contrast and scan with another device to make it work. The product however, works as advertised.
I hope this helps!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice to heat/cool house from a specific point

Reviewed in Canada on December 7, 2019

This product is ideal for our home. We have our thermostat located in a small hallway that has 2 registers in it. We had to plug those two registers so the furnace doesn't constantly turn on and off. The thermostat temperature rises very quickly and shuts off the furnace before the rest of the house gets heated. For this reason our furnace runs in short spurts.

Heating the house using one of the temperature sensors is ideal because than we can unplug the two registers in the hallway to help the main floor heat faster without distorting the temperature on the thermostat.

The best thermostat plus the temperature sensors have increased our heating efficiency drastically by letting us use another location in the house to heat off of.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth it, don't buy it

Reviewed in Canada on January 14, 2022

This took me 2 days of trying to set up. In the end I reached out to support and they asked me to factory reset my Nest thermostat. Which was very annoying but that worked. Then 3 days later, all of the sensors disconnected at the same time and wouldn't connect. The distance of the sensors from the thermostat or obstacles in between doesn't matter at all. I even bought a brand new latest 3rd gen thermostat. After the sensors disconnect, you are unable to connect again and have to reset the thermostat. I am not going to do this every 3 days. Returning these. If they worked, they would have been great. But seems like there is still bugs and issues to be fixed before this is a useful product. So I wouldn't recommend buying this. I am going to return this now.

2.0 out of 5 stars Bare minimum, barely worth it

Reviewed in Canada on April 20, 2022

For a company that can automate calling someone on the phone with AI, it is unbelievable how barely functional this product is.

The sensors stopped working within a week. I suppose they shipped me near dead batteries even though the website says they should last 2 years.

Setup was sufficiently non obvious that I am sure my parents wouldn't be able to do it. For me, it was functional with an absence of delight.

The product is so bare bones that you cannot intelligently program or automate much. You can set a fixed schedule of which sensors to use or set the whole house to one of the sensors. No "never let this room go under this temperature" sort of smarts to be found.

When my 3 sensors stopped connecting (they show "Offline") I am still unclear - Is the battery dead? Can they not connect to my thermostat? Are they broken? The support pages are not helpful.

Buy these if you want, I guess. You have no other option if you want the sensor. Weigh how much knowing the temperature of various rooms means to you, and if a fixed schedule is good enough. Hope for a sale and maybe you will feel less ripped off.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing deal and awesome product

We had our Nest installed in my husband's studio room - where the doors are always closed and it tends to be very warm. That meant our house was always freezing. We installed one of these throughout all three floors of the house and we can now pick the temperature we want depending on what room we are in.

Bonus these are MUCH cheaper on amazon than in store!
