How Many Hours Can A 15-Year-Old Work?

How many hours can a 15-year-old work is surprisingly flexible. However, because you must remain in school while you’re working, there are some rules you and your employer must appreciate and follow.

During term time, you can only work a maximum of 12 hours a week. You can work a maximum of 2 hours on school days and Sundays. On Saturdays, you can work for a maximum of 8 hours. However, you are not allowed to work before 7 am and after 7 pm, and you cannot work during school hours, sorry!

During the school holidays, you can work a maximum of 35 hours a week. This is divided into 8 hours on weekdays and Saturdays. You are only allowed to work a maximum of 2 hours on Sundays.

As a 15-year-old, you must have at least 1 hour break for every 4 hours worked. You also have to take a 2-week break from school and working once a year.

15-Year-Old Working Laws

15-year-old working laws means you’re limited to what types of jobs you can do. However, you should contact your local council and see what job restrictions there are - as some councils will allow you to work in a place that may otherwise be illegal. Check what your local bylaws says before starting any new job, just in case.

Legally, you are not allowed to work in these areas:

  • Workplaces like a factory or an industrial estate.
  • You cannot work in places like pubs and betting shops, or other workplaces that require at least the age of 18 to work there.
  • You cannot work in a place that may be harmful to your health or well-being.
  • You cannot work for more than 1 hour before school.

Remember to check with your local council before starting any new job - as some local bylaws will allow you to work for 1 hour before school. You do this contacting your local education department or education welfare service. You should also be aware that, because you’re still a child, you are not entitled to employment rights.

Pay Rate For A 15-Year-Old

The pay rate for a 15-year-old will vary from job to job. However, you are legally obliged to at least the minimum wage for your age group. The current minimum wage for a 15 -year-old is £4.35 an hour. If you start a job and you’re paid less than this an hour, your boss is breaking the law! Make sure the salary is at least £4.35 an hour before signing any new contract, and make sure you’re getting the correct amount per hour if you’re getting cash in hand.
