Offset gooseneck ball for ram factory hitch

While the basic CURT gooseneck ball offers all the towing power needed for towing that heavy-duty flatbed trailer, a standard trailer ball does not always provide the perfect fit for your unique application. The CURT offset gooseneck ball is the fast, convenient way to offset the placement of your gooseneck hitch by 4".If you have owned your gooseneck for any amount of time, you know it is bolted in there to stay, but what happens when you need to pull a gooseneck trailer with an especially long front overhang? Without the right amount of clearance between the overhang and your truck cab, those tight corners can be a little tough. The CURT Double Lock gooseneck offset ball easily slides into any Double Lock gooseneck hitch and sets the coupling point 4" back of the original trailer ball hole. The offset gooseneck trailer ball secures into place, just like any other compatible gooseneck ball, using the Double Lock's dual-pin locking system. It offers a gross trailer weight capacity up to 20,000 lbs. and a vertical load capacity of 5,000 lbs. At CURT, we know the demands that come with a hard-working lifestyle: the noise of the construction site, the long hours behind the wheel of a tractor, the potential dangers of high-powered equipment. You should expect your towing equipment to endure when facing the same demands. With our tried and true designs and knack for innovation, CURT proudly offers its extensive line of gooseneck hitches, knowing they will never steer you wrong.

FEATURES:

  • ADDED CLEARANCE. This Double Lock gooseneck ball allows you to clearance between your gooseneck trailer and truck cab. It easily drops into place and moves the coupling point 4 inches rearward of the gooseneck ball hole

I've been towing my 5th wheel for about 2 years with a 2005 Cummins Crew Cab Short Bed. To enable the RV to clear the cab while turning sharp I used a 7.5" gooseneck converter in conjunction with a 4" offset ball in the bed such as this:

I just sold that truck and bought a 2016 Mega Cab dually that has the factory gooseneck system in it, which uses a ball like this:

I can not seem to find an offset ball for this factory gooseneck hitch and I'm not even sure that design lends itself safely to one.

Anyone got any ideas? I need the extra 4" and I do not want my bed tied up with a 5th wheel hitch.

Remove the factory hitch and install a B&W. Then, you'll be able to use all of the different adapters and balls that are available.

I'd be looking into the Anderson hitch with the Ram factory ball. It has some offset built into it.

I didn't even think about that. I guess I just assumed that it was all welded in there. Would the 4 corner factory holes remain unchanged or unused?

Wouldn't that require another possibly overlapping hole in the middle of the bed? Link to product?

Just so you know, the B&W in your 05 is about 6" in front of the centerline of the rear axle, the factory hitch is more like 1 inch. My 2010 has a B&W bolt in and with the 4 inch offset is still closer to the cab then my '18 with a straight ball.

Oh, you're talking about one of those pyramid thingies? I don't think I have the height available to do that. Neat concept though!

I just went and measured the '10 and it's 45 1/2 inches from rear of bed to center of ball, the '18 is 41 1/4. So it 4 1/4 different, looks like more with the same trailer hooked up but the tape don't lie.:grin2:
If you want to know why I didn't measure to the front, that would require tool box removal in the 2010 and well .....I got better things to do.

So you're thinking my 2016 has more rear offset built in than my 2005 did? That would sure be convenient if so. Now I wish I had my 2005 to measure!

That would sure be convenient and cheaper if so!

I know it does, the b&w has always been the same. I think the kit for the 2010 is the same since 03 trucks.
Just go on b&w' s site and look up the install directions for an 05 truck and see where you drill the hole it will be 45 1/2 inches from rear.

You're right. I just measured my Mega Cab and the center of the ball is about 41.5" from the rear edge of the bed. And these instructions place it 45.5" on the 2005. So maybe that is the offset that I need! It would be nice not to need a $550 hitch! I guess I need to go get the truck under the RV and start playing around with it a bit.

Oddly, the long bed dimension for the 05 is 2" different than the short. I bet placement has more to do with body and frame obstacles than ideal ball placement.

Unchanged and unused. The B&W bolts in the same recess. Your hitch is farther back, so you may want to try without the extension, or just be a little more careful backing up.

Well somehow it still wasn't back far enough. After some careful testing the RV will still hit the cab. so I've ordered the B&W hitch. It will be better in the long-run to have a standardized receiver in there. The OEM's really didn't think these factory gooseneck setups out too thoroughly, IMO. I haven't seen many trailers with chains long enough to reach those corner holes either, much less turn with them attached. And the round ball with the bearings that allow it to spin in place eliminates the possibility of any offset balls.

That's what I'm running in my '18 just an FYI you do have to lift the bed a couple 3 inches to get the old hitch bolts out. Then the b&w bolts in from the bottom and they give you a template for the chain hook bolts so it can be drilled from the top, pretty easy really.

Hitch installed and 4" offset ball tested, RV will still contact cab. There is something dimensionally different with the mega in comparison to the short bed because I could completely jackknife the camper with the 05 and 4" less offset and still clear the cab. This is frustrating.

Will a Ford gooseneck ball work on a RAM?

Yes, the gooseneck hitch balls for the factory prep packages are the same for Ram and Ford.

How do you take the ram out of a gooseneck ball?

On the bottom of the hitch ball will be a plastic or aluminum plug. Remove the plug and you will see a bar inside that is used to hold the bearings in place. You will need to rotate the bar 90 degrees to release the bearings, but be careful as the internals of the hitch ball will likely fall out once the bar is turned.

What is a gooseneck hitch adapter?

A gooseneck is a type of trailer hitch that attaches to a towing ball mounted in the bed of a truck instead of a 5th wheel hitch. Gooseneck hitches have more stability for towing heavy loads because they connect to the truck's frame. This means you'll have a more even weight distribution for heavy trailers.

What's the difference between gooseneck and fifth wheel hitch?

Is a gooseneck the same as a fifth wheel? No, a gooseneck is not the same as a fifth wheel. A gooseneck hitch uses a ball to connect to a unique style of vertical coupler on a gooseneck trailer. A fifth wheel hitch uses a set of jaws and pivoting plate to connect to the kingpin of a fifth wheel trailer.
