How much does it cost to rent a U-Haul trailer?

U-Haul advertises trailer rental rates starting at $14.95, but prices for long-distance moves (where you pick up at one location and drop off at another) are based on the equipment you need, the distance between locations and the amount of time you need the rental for. It’s important to know some trailers may not be available for long-distance rentals, so you might need to get different equipment than planned — which may cost more money. What vehicles can tow a U-Haul trailer?

You can pull a trailer with a U-Haul rental truck or a personal vehicle, but there are some specific requirements. Certain vehicle types are excluded — for safety reasons, U-Haul won’t let you pull a trailer with a Ford Explorer built in certain years or with any soft-top SUVs.

The standard size is the 2" hitch ball. The 2" hitch ball is the standard size required to rent a U-Haul trailer, whether it be the 5x9 Utility Trailer or 6x12 Cargo Trailer. The 2" hitch ball fits most class 3 receivers, which is typically the most common trailer hitch.

What size ball do I need for my hitch?

The standard ball size for a trailer hitch is 2 inches in diameter. Most trailers have a 2-inch coupler, making the 2-inch ball the standard size. However, the ball size may be different depending on the size of the trailer. The other common ball sizes include 1-7/8 inches and 2-5/16 inches.

Can you use a inch and 7 8 ball for 2 inch hitch?

No, it is not safe to use a 1-7/8 inch ball with a trailer that has a 2 inch ball coupler. Most couplers have an adjustment for the latching mechanism that may solve your issue. If you are hooking and unhooking on a surface that is not level, normally uphill or downhill, this too can cause the issue you have explained.

What size ball do most travel trailers used?

The hitch ball used to tow most travel trailers is a 2-inch or 2-5/16-inch trailer ball. Travel trailers can weigh anywhere from 5,000 to 10,000 lbs or more. The 2-inch to 2-5/16-inch ball weight ratings provide a perfect match. Additionally, many travel trailers are pulled using a weight distribution hitch.
