Destiny 2 max light level season 15

Every new expansion shakes up Destiny 2’s Power Level (also known as Light Level before Beyond Light) and levels the playing field by sending all guardians to square one. This means that whenever a new expansion drops, players must reacquire the hard-earned levels they got—from the floor to the hard cap.

With The Witch Queen, players were sent back to the minimum of 1,350 Power and had to earn back their levels by getting gear and completing specific activities. While the Power Level won’t reset back to the minimum again until Lightfall, each season also raises the goalposts a bit, meaning players will have to do some grinding. Here’s what you need to know about Power Levels (or Light Levels, as veteran players are used to seeing) in Destiny 2.

What is the max Power Level in Destiny 2?

As of Season of the Seraph, the max Power Level (or Light Level, for veteran players) available in Destiny 2 is 1590, marking a 10-level increase from the previous baseline in Season of Plunder. This means you can’t level your gear above 1590, though the artifact bonuses will get your character’s level above that—an advantage you’ll need for higher-end content like Grandmaster Nightfalls or Master versions of raids and dungeons.

If you’re looking to get to the maximum possible level (the hard cap), you’ll need to be aware of Powerful and Pinnacle caps, which dictate what activities you can do to raise your Power Level. Here are the levels for each Power milestone after the release of The Witch Queen and what each of them means. Seasonal artifact levels don’t count toward either cap.

All Power Level caps in Destiny 2

These values reflect the numbers for Season of the Seraph. Comparisons relate to Season of Plunder

  • Minimum cap (floor): 1350 Power
  • Soft cap: 1530 Power (previously 1520)
  • Powerful cap: 1580 Power (previously 1,570)
  • Pinnacle cap/hard cap: 1590 Power (previously 1,580)

Soft cap (1350 to 1530)

Players will be around the soft cap for the first stage of their journey. From 1,350 to 1,500 Power Level, players will gradually get items that increase their level regardless of what activities they do. Even blue drops will raise your level, so don’t dismantle them just yet. The Witch Queen campaign should leave guardians around 1,500 Power Level by the time it ends, so players can progress through it naturally (though they may be underleveled for some missions). The Legendary version of the campaign should also give players a full set of 1,530 gear (up from 1,520 in Risen).

Powerful cap (1530 to 1580)

After reaching 1530, players will have a narrower pool of options to choose from if they want to level. The most notable change is that blues and regular world drops won’t boost their Light level past 1530 (or whatever their maximum equipable level is). From here on, the only way to boost your drops will be from Powerful and Pinnacle sources. The sources for Powerful drops are:

  • Prime Engrams (drop randomly from powerful enemies)
  • Vendor bounties: complete eight bounties for eligible vendors. They are:
    • Fynch (Savathûn’s Throne World)
    • Zavala (Vanguard)
    • Shaxx (Crucible)
    • Banshee-44 (Gunsmith)
    • The Drifter (Gambit)
    • Seasonal vendor (Clovis Bray Exo Frame)
  • Complete three Wellspring runs in the Throne World (Tier one)
  • Complete two Altars of Reflection runs in the Throne World (Tier one)
  • Complete three Dares of Eternity runs (Tier one)
  • Complete Nightfalls (progress varies on difficulty)
  • Open two Runic Chests in PsiOps Battlegrounds (Tier one)
  • Complete the weekly mission in the Throne World (Tier one)
  • Random +1 drops from playlist activities
  • Major rank-ups from vendors
  • Complete a Ketchcrash mission
  • Open Seraph Chests

These are all Powerful drop sources in Destiny 2 as of Season of the Seraph, but players can also raise their Power Level through Pinnacle drops. Treat Pinnacle drops as extra Powerful drops until you’re close to the hard cap. Once you’re at 1580, though, Pinnacles will be the only way to level.

Pinnacle cap/hard cap (1580 to 1590)

This is the last level restriction in Destiny 2, and players can only advance their Power Level through Pinnacle drops until reaching the hard cap. This means players can’t improve their level beyond 1590, but they can artificially boost their Power with the seasonal artifact.

Leveling is Destiny 2 can be tricky, because the Power Level is constantly changing each season, and there are so many activities it can be tough to know where to get the gear appropriate for your level. Not to mention a bunch of gear will only drop at certain levels. Here is the soft cap for Destiny 2 Season 15.

What The Soft Cap is In Destiny 2 Season 15

Destiny 2 max light level season 15

In season 15, the Power Level was increased by 10 levels, making it 1330. This is a smaller increase than the previous season which increased the Power Level by 50 points.

For new players and lower-level players, you don’t need to worry about this yet. That’s because the soft cap in Season 15 is 1270, which means all of the blue, purple, and exotic gear that drops randomly from any activity will be higher than your level if you are below 1270.

Once you hit 1270, you’ll need to start seeking out Powerful Gear, which can be found by going into the Director and looking for activities with the gold icon next to them. It will tell you the requirements to receive Powerful gear, which will drop all the way up to Power Level 1320.

If you want to hit the highest level in Destiny 2, you’ll need to seek out Pinnacle Gear, which will be the hardest challenge in the game.
