6 day trip to costa rica

The timing is tight, but this itinerary packs a lot into a weeklong vacation. This route takes you to a trifecta of Costa Rica’s primary tourist attractions: Arenal Volcano, Monteverde, and Manuel Antonio. You can explore and enjoy tropical nature, take in some beach time, and experience a few high-adrenaline adventures.

DAY 1: Arrive & settle into San José

Arrive and get settled in San José. If your flight gets in early enough and you have time, head downtown and tour the Museos del Banco Central de Costa Rica (Pre-Columbian Gold Museum) or the nearby Museo de Jade Marco Fidel Tristán (Jade Museum).

As you walk around town, stop at one of the roadside stands or kiosks selling small bags of precut and prepared fruit. Depending on the season, you might find mango, pineapple, or papaya on offer. You might also find caimito, aka star apple, a purple fruit that looks like a plum on the outside but has star-shaped white pulp on the inside.

Head over to the Teatro Nacional. If anything is playing that night, buy tickets for the show. For an eye-opening and delicious dinner, try Sikwa ★★★, a contemporary restaurant that takes its cues from Costa Rica’s indigenous culinary heritage, using ingredients from small producers and foragers around the country .

DAY 2: Hot stuff

Rent a car and head to the Arenal National Park and the Arenal Volcano area. Hike the Sendero Coladas (Lava Flow Trail) ★★, which will take you onto and over a cooled-off lava flow. Spend the evening in the natural hot springs at the Tabacón Grand Spa Thermal Resort, working out the kinks from the road and hike. (The volcano may be dormant right now, but the natural hot springs are working just fine.) And you might want to splurge on a massage or spa treatment.

DAY 3: Adventures around Arenal, ending in Monteverde

Spend the morning doing something adventurous around Arenal National Park. Your options include whitewater rafting, mountain biking, horseback riding, and hiking to La Fortuna Waterfall. Desafío Adventure Co. offers a great canyoning adventure. After your active morning, hit the road, as you want to allot at least 4 hours of daylight to drive around Lake Arenal to Monteverde. Stop for a break at the Lucky Bug Gallery, along the road between Tabacón and Nuevo Arenal, an excellent place to shop for gifts, artwork, and souvenirs. Once you get to Monteverde, settle into your hotel and head for a farm-to-table dinner at Celajes, paired with beer from their own microbrewery.

DAY 4: Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve

Wake up early and take a guided tour of the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve. Spend the afternoon visiting some of the area’s other attractions, which might include any combination of the following: the Butterfly Garden, Orchid Garden, Selvatura Park, Trapiche Tour and the Bat Jungle. End the evening with a multi-course meal in the rainforest canopy at the San Lucas Treetop Dining Experience.

DAY 5: From the treetops to the coast

Use the morning to go bird and wildlife watching from a network of paths and suspension bridges at Sky Walk, which puts you up in the cloud forest canopy to peek at flora and fauna you won’t see on the ground. Be sure to schedule the visit early enough so that you can hit the road by noon for your drive to Manuel Antonio National Park. Settle into your hotel and head for a sunset drink at Agua Azul, which offers up spectacular views over the rainforest to the sea.

DAY 6: Manuel Antonio

In the morning, take a boat tour of the Damas Island estuary, and then reward yourself for all the hard touring so far with an afternoon lazing on one of the beautiful beaches inside Manuel Antonio National Park. If you just can’t lie still, hike the loop trail through the rainforest here and around Cathedral Point. Make reservations at Café Milagro for an intimate and relaxed final dinner in Costa Rica.

DAY 7: Saying adiós

Drive back to San José in time to drop off your rental car and connect with your departing flight home.

From rainforests, cloud forests, and tropical forests in San Jose to the undeveloped Santa Teresa, there is something for everyone no matter if you’re craving the beach, an adventure seeker, or a nature-lover.

Everyone tells you how amazing Costa Rica is, without telling you where to go, what to see, or only providing you with a few of the most popular sites without showing you what this country is really about.

This 7 day Costa Rica itinerary will cover all of the main attractions and must-see places in Costa Rica but also include a few lesser-known gems in Santa Teresa.

To help you plan your time in Costa Rica, I have included a map, recommendations on the best time to visit Santa Teresa, how to get there, how long to stay, and where to stay in Santa Teresa.

6 day trip to costa rica

7 Days / 6 Nights Cost Rica Itinerary & Overview

The best way to experience all that Costa Rica has to offer is to visit multiple times because you can’t see this beautiful country in just seven days.

Whether you are spending your time relaxing on a beach or hiking through a rainforest, your trip will be an unforgettable experience.

From San Jose, plan on spending three days exploring Pacific beaches and surfing in Puerto Viejo; two days enjoying waterfall hikes in La Fortuna; one day exploring cloud forests with zip-lining in Monteverde, and two nights enjoying beach life while snorkeling Isla Uvita.

However, in order to help you narrow it down, I’ve compiled a list of the very best things to do in Costa Rica including ziplining, surfing, hiking, and shopping.

Adventure travelers can go horseback riding, zip-lining through the cloud forest canopy, hiking in the mountains, or canoeing which all can be done easily with a guided tour organized through your hotel.

6 day trip to costa rica

San Jose

Most international flights arrive at Juan Santamaria airport in San Jose (SJO) and most tourists will leave via ferry or crop duster plane on to their final destination.

San Jose is not the prettiest destination so do not be thrown off by what you see as soon as you step off of the plane.

Day 1: Arrive in San Jose

Arrive in San Jose! Drive to your Costa Rica hotel in San Jose. Have a quick bite to eat, then get some rest. You’ll be busy tomorrow!

If you decide to do a little sightseeing in San Jose the Central Market should be the first stop if you want to delve more into Costa Rica’s culture.

You can also find souvenir shops, clothing shops, and locals selling handmade pottery and jewelry.

Next, you should check out Morazan Park especially if you are on sensory overload and in need of a quiet place to walk around or just relax without all of the noise.

Upon arrival, you can’t miss the pair of golden wings that are immediately at the entrance. They are clever and inviting ideas that are great for a photo.

The park itself is a little dated but the area is nice and it could be fun to sit and watch the skaters perform tricks on the local bandstand.

If you love museums head over to the National Museum of Costa Rica.  Visitors will learn about the history of Costa Rica which is really quite fascinating.

If history is your thing, check out the Jade Museum. The building looks like a piece of jade and is home to a collection of pre-Columbian jade artifacts.

Where to stay in San Jose

The majority of travelers don’t stay long in the city. Rather, they use it as a jumping point or travel directly to their next destination.

For those travelers interested in the culture and happenings around the capital city or for those staying overnight following a late flight, San Jose Costa Rica hotels vary widely by style, budget, and interest.

You only need one day in San Jose so don’t put too much thought, time, or money into where to stay.

Here are my top picks for where to stay in San Jose.

1. Gran Hotel Costa Rica

2. Hotel Grano de Oro

3. San Jose Marriott

4. Aloft San Jose

Where to Eat in San Jose

While Costa Rican food isn’t widely known outside of the country, it’s simple, wholesome, and definitely worth a try.

Costa Rican cuisine contains various combinations of meat, rice, beans, plantain, salads, vegetables, cheese, and corn tortillas.

1. Park Café

For an exceptionally well-crafted evening, make sure to seek out the Park Café. This gastronomic restaurant, located by the large Sabana Park, provides only the best and will not sacrifice quality for a larger influx of guests; so much so that you will need to make reservations here in advance.

Whether sitting inside, surrounded by antiques, or in the elegant garden outside, the Park Café provides an intimate environment to enjoy an evening with close companions.

2. Café de Los Deseos

With a setting that feels almost more like an art gallery than a restaurant, Café de Los Deseos whisks you away to a funky evening that is, in a word, hip.

With dishes inspired by cultures all over the world, it really will fulfill your deseos (wishes). They offer a variety of coffee drinks and alcoholic beverages including craft beer and sangria.

3. Restaurante Grano de Oro

The fine-dining restaurant Grano de Oro, located in the boutique hotel of the same name, serves gourmet cuisine for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Featuring both European and Costa Rican dishes, the restaurant offers a variety of flavors as well as an extensive wine list.

It’s no surprise the restaurant has gained such an outstanding reputation with alluring dishes such as the ‘a foie gras crème brûlée with caramelized pears.

4. Andiamo La

This Italian restaurant located in the neighborhood of Santa Ana is not to be missed while visiting San José. Enjoy traditional Italian dishes such as gourmet pizzas, ravioli, panna cotta, antipasti, calamari, and gnocchi that will make you feel like you’re in Italy.

The welcoming ambiance and attentive staff make for a relaxed experience, even attracting famous clientele such as actor Chris Hemsworth.

DAY 2- La Fortuna: Arenal Volcano & Hot Springs

La Fortuna is a great place to spend your second day. The activities are limitless so you can really take your time enjoying what Costa Rica has to offer.

Although there’s not much history in La Fortuna, it still makes for a beautiful town with nature surrounding it. The beauty doesn’t stop there, however, since you can also find waterfalls nearby as well as a volcano that erupts every hour or so.

Hiking through La Fortuna will give you access to both breathtaking scenery as well as abundant wildlife; make sure to visit at least one waterfall!

This town has plenty to do and see without getting bored quickly. You might also want to consider spending more than just two days here if you want to go on even more exciting adventures such as rappelling down a cliff face or relaxing at an all-inclusive resort.

Not only is staying in La Fortuna worth it but it could be cheaper too if you choose wisely. Remember though that many hotels get booked up quickly during certain times of the year so make sure to book ahead if possible!

Hike through lush rain forest; visit a butterfly garden and Maleku Indian village; take a dip at La Fortuna waterfall; look for wildlife, and view the Arenal Volcano. Top off the day with a cocktail and a relaxing soak in a natural hot water river.

  • Includes lunch and cocktail
  • Hear insightful commentary from the guide
  • Hotel pickup and drop-off provided
  • Small-group tour limited to 10 people

Exploring La Fortuna

Up until December 2010, the Arenal Volcano was considered to be Costa Rica’s most active volcano. It is now ranked third behind Rincon de la Vieja and Turrialba.

The Arenal Volcano is the most picturesque volcano and has the iconic cone shape.

The surrounding area is rich with wildlife, beautiful rainforests, waterfalls, and natural thermal hot springs, with so many exciting and family-fun adventure activities and nature tours available in the Arenal Volcano National Park and La Fortuna area.

Incredible Places to Stay Around the Arenal Volcano, Costa Rica

Day 4 – Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui

Get up early for a sunrise hike through Sarapiqui River & Rainforest Reserve. Your expert guide will teach you about life in Costa Rica as you walk through private rainforest land on your way to breakfast at Hotel Alegria.

After enjoying a tasty Costa Rican breakfast at Hotel Alegria, relax in one of their hammocks for a few hours before taking a dip in their swimming pool.

Then make your way to Playas San Josecito, one of Costa Rica’s best beaches, where you can enjoy snorkeling with sea turtles or stand-up paddleboarding before heading back to Puerto Viejo to spend some time relaxing in town.

Day 5 – Tamarindo

Tamarindo is often called the place to be in Costa Rica. In truth, you can experience a lot more of what Costa Rica has to offer if you base yourself in Tamarindo.

Although one day here is fun, staying longer will allow you to experience more of its unique activities like horseback riding, surfing lessons, snorkeling, or fishing trips.

For those who like their beach more casual (and less touristy), Tamarindo can provide that as well. If a romantic getaway is your idea of paradise, book a room at one of Tamarindo’s many B&Bs or boutique hotels or stay at an all-inclusive resort.

Depending on where you stay, you may even have access to private beaches and resorts like Hotel Guanacaste Tamarindo Beach Resort & Spa—this option makes it easy for those who want privacy while they take advantage of all that Tamarindo has to offer.

Spend time along Playa Grande (aka Big Beach) or head out on a boat trip; both are great ways to soak up some sun without fighting through crowds!

While there is not much nightlife in town aside from restaurants, bars do pop up on Playas Chiquita and Negra when tourists start flooding into town at night from nearby neighborhoods like Papagayo and Flamingo.

Day 6 Santa Teresa Costa Rica

Santa Teresa, one of Costa Rica’s most visited destinations, was once a hippie getaway. Things have changed since then, but Santa Teresa still has an interesting feel to it, like what I imagine California was like in the 1970s.

The best part is that while Santa Teresa can be touristy at times, it still maintains its homegrown vibe.

More often than not you’ll find local Costa Ricans sitting on plastic chairs outside bars playing cards or dominoes as live music plays in front of them.

There are no skyscrapers here either; instead, you’ll see houses with murals on their walls painted by famous artists from around the world.

If you’re looking for beaches and sunbathing (which you will find), head south to nearby Playas del Coco which has been rated one of the top five beaches in Costa Rica.

But if your preference is less sunshine and more adventure, continue up north through the Osa Peninsula until reaching Corcovado National Park where nature lovers should hike into Corcovado Rainforest Trail.

Other options include diving or scuba diving in Isla del Caño, surfing near the Baru volcano, or hiking trails near Turrialba. If all else fails there’s always Papagayo beach where you can just chill out under a palm tree while sipping tropical drinks.

Explore Santa Teresa, Costa Rica

There is so much to do while staying in Santa Teresa; it’s a great destination for those who are seeking action-packed adventure days, as well as those who are seeking a more zen-like escape complete with yoga, massages, and long sunset walks.

Maybe the perfect Santa Teresa day is complete with action and relaxation. Whatever you are seeking on your Costa Rica trip, it is likely that you will be able to achieve it in Santa Teresa.

There are three main surf breaks in Santa Teresa and several more just south in Mal Pais. Playa Santa Teresa has a variety of beach breaks and point breaks.

The waves here tend to be faster, hollower, and more powerful. Playa Santa Teresa is great for experienced surfers, especially when there is a good swell.

Just north of Playa Santa Teresa is Playa Hermosa, which is a gentler wave and perfect for beginners, especially when the waves are on the smaller side. Then, at the very end, is Manzanillo, which is a reefy point break.

Hike to the waterfall

Just a short ATV or car ride away is the entrance to the Montezuma waterfalls. This is a great day activity for those looking to hike to and swim beneath a giant cascade.

The hike can be a bit hot, so make sure to bring water and wear sunscreen, but the cool pool at the end is a wonderful and refreshing reward.

For the daredevils out there, you can actually climb up the waterfall and jump off of it. Be careful of the rocks below though.

Explore a nature reserve

Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve is one of the oldest nature reserves in Costa Rica and is a spectacular place to visit.

Cabo Blanco is home to a large variety of birds, mammals, and other animals, among which are anteaters, white-tailed deer, capuchin monkeys, coyotes, and elusive wildcats.

There are also over 150 different types of trees that have been identified here. Don’t miss this beautiful reserve when staying in the Santa Teresa area.

Is 6 days enough in Costa Rica?

Even a mere six days is enough time to experience the highlights of Costa Rica. On this brisk itinerary, you'll do just that, visiting both Arenal and Corcovado National Park as well as enjoying waterfall hikes and exotic wildlife safaris.

How many days you need for Costa Rica?

We recommend spending 10 days to two weeks in Costa Rica, as this timeframe will give you enough time to cover all the major highlights while also including time for traveling from one destination to another. A two-week Costa Rica itinerary will guarantee you see everything the country has to offer.

Can you visit Costa Rica 7 days?

Costa Rica is also a relatively small country, making it the perfect destination to explore even on a week-long trip. Although this might feel like a short time to explore Costa Rica, 7 days gives you enough time to see the country's best highlights.

How much money do I need for a week in Costa Rica?

A week of vacation in Costa Rica costs between $850 and $1,450 for an average traveler in mid-priced hotels, lodges or rental houses and doing standard tours (assuming double occupancy). Beachfront accommodations and high dollar activities like deep sea fishing will quickly push the budget over $2,500.
