Finally the wait is over and Today at Mobile World Congress Microsoft released the Windows 8 Consumer Preview. After the launch of Windows 8 Developer Preview it’s the next milestone where Microsoft showcased the Windows 8 Consumer Preview in Spain along with Visual Studio 11 beta and Windows 8 Server beta. Here are the direct links to the ISO images, grab your own.

Microsoft has included some metro styled applications along with the Consumer Preview build which has over 100,000 code changes made since the Windows 8 Developer Preview, which was released back in September 2011.

Before you start installing, you need to know that minimum system requirements include 1GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, at-least 16GB of HDD space and Microsoft DirectX9 graphics card. As you’d know Windows 8 is multitouch enabled OS, so in order to test the multitouch capabilities, you would need a tablet or monitor that supports multitouch.

If you are on a PC, here is a guide to install Windows 8 on Virtual Box. In case you didn’t know, you can easily boot Windows 8 from a USB or a DVD! Get going right now.

Update: Apparently, you will be able to upgrade to Windows 8 Consumer preview directly from Windows 8 Developer Preview, which would preserve your settings and files.

Windows 8 is the obvious successor to Windows 7 but it comes with MANY changes which is sure to please many people, while the developer preview was released last year there is now a consumer preview out which is available for free and is obviously a trial OS until the real OS comes, but considering this is a trial OS which comes from free this doesn't mean that ALL the features of Windows 8 are fully implemented in it just yet but at least you can get used to Windows 8 ahead of its release later this year and get ready to use it on your laptop / desktop. If you are having trouble installing the OS I will make a guide on how to properly burn the ISO tomorrow, for now download your OS and keep it at the ready for install.

The requirements for Windows 8 are the same as Windows 7, which means if your machine is capable of Windows 7 it is ready for Windows 8:

• Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster
• RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)
• Hard disk space: 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
• Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device or higher
• To use touch, you need a tablet or monitor that supports multitouch
• To access Windows Store and to download and run apps, you need an active Internet connection and a screen resolution of at least 1024 x 768
• To snap apps, you need a screen resolution of at least 1366 x 768
