TONIGHT: Clouds have now rolled in as a strong piece of upper level energy dives through the Tennessee Valley and then out off the southeastern U.S. coastline. While a few snow showers will cross through those areas, we will see nothing more than clouds that look to break in the late night hours allowing temperatures to drop off to the teens in the outlying suburbs to 24 here in Center City.

TUESDAY: Slowly temperatures moderate this week as we gain a few degrees every day. High 38 with decent sun come late morning and into the afternoon.

WEDNESDAY: Sun, few clouds, high 45.

THURSDAY: Mostly sunny and even milder, high 49.

FRIDAY: Mostly sunny and very mild, high 54.

SATURDAY (NEW YEAR'S EVE): Another very mild day with increasing clouds. Rain moves in later in the day and into the night, high 56.

SUNDAY (NEW YEAR'S DAY): Unseasonably warm with leftover rain possible in the morning, then just cloudy. High 61.

Lake effect snow showers continue tonight, with most spots across northern lower Michigan seeing up to an additional inch of accumulation. The heaviest lake effect snows will favor northern Chippewa County in the eastern U.P., where a few additional inches of accumulation are possible. Scattered lake effect snow showers will continue through the day Tuesday before a quick hitting clipper system passes through the area, bringing a brief period of steadier snow, particularly across the eastern U.P., where some spots may see up to 4-6” of new accumulation. Across northern lower, accumulations will generally be an inch or less outside of the Tip of the Mitt, where 1-3” is possible by Wednesday morning.

Beyond then, temperatures will trend markedly warmer, with highs reaching into the 40s for Thursday and Friday. Rain chances will also increase for Thursday and Friday.

Watch out for slick roadways overnight into Tuesday morning, as a result of snow shower activity/freezing drizzle Monday evening. Some patches of freezing fog overnight could also lead to some new slick spots, so plan on giving yourself some extra time for your Tuesday morning drive. The environmental conditions have to be just right for this fog to develop, so we’ll watch things closely through the morning.

High temperatures will climb a few degrees higher on Tuesday, with mostly cloudy skies sticking around. We’ll reach the upper 20s, with winds gradually increasing as we progress into Tuesday night. We could see some gusts up to 25 mph.

Wednesday will be even warmer and it will be windy. Highs will reach up to around 40 degrees. We’ll see some occasional gusts up to 30 mph, with skies turning partly cloudy.

Once we get past Wednesday, we’ll see lots of 50 degree days in our forecast. What a big change compared to the arctic air we’ve seen around here lately! Thursday through Tuesday next week all feature highs in the 50s, except for Sunday when we drop back into the upper 40s. However, the warmth will be accompanied by chances for rain showers, with the best chance being on Saturday (New Year’s Eve). We’ll keep a close eye on the rain chances as we inch closer to 2023.
