Description

The prettiest girl

I ever saw

Was sippin’ cider

Through a straw

The prettiest girl I ever saw

Was sippin’ cider through a straw

I asked her if

She’d teach me how

To sip some cider

Through a straw

I asked her if she’d reach me how

To sip some cider through a straw

First cheek to cheek

Then jaw to jaw

We sipped that cider

Through a straw

First cheek to cheek, then jaw to jaw

We sipped that cider through a straw

And now and then

That straw did slip

And we’d sip cider

Lip to lip

And now and then that straw did slip

And we’d sip cider lip to lip

And now I’ve got

A mother-in-law

And nineteen kids

That call me “Paw”

And now I’ve got a mother-in-law

And nineteen kids that call me “Paw”

The moral of

This little tale

Is sip your cider

Through a pail

The moral of this little tale

Is sip your cider through a pail

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Sweetest girl I ever saw,
Was selling cider in a groc’ry store,
At half-past six when the sun would set,
I used to go to see my pet
She’d take the key and lock the door,
We’d get some cider and a big long straw.

[Chorus]
Thipping thider thru a thtraw,
we sat there for hours or more,
I thipped firtht and she thipped latht,
But she thipped motht because she thipped tho fatht

[Ending 1]
We thipped till our thtraw did thlip,
And I thipped thider from her lip,
That;s how I won my mother-in-law,
Thipping thider thru a big, long thtraw.

[Verse 2]
When first I saw her with a straw,
Said I to “she,” “What are you doing that for?”
Said she to me: “Why don’t you know, That sipping cider’s all the go?”
She was so sweet, as sweet can be,
But sipping cider was the end of me.

[Chorus]

[Ending 2]
Cheek to cheek like Paw and Maw,
We thipped till our lipth got sore,
Now I’ve got ten kids or more,
Thipping thider thru a big, long, thtraw

I am trying to remember the words to a song I learned in about 6th grade
and can only remember these:

"The cutest boy....I ever saw....was sipping cider....through a straw. The
cutest boy I ever saw....Was sipping cider through a straw..."

"First cheek to cheek....then jaw to jaw....we'd sip our cider....through
a straw....First cheek to cheek the jaw to jaw....we sipped our cider
through a straw...."

If it sounds familiar to you and you know the words, please pass them on.
My daughter wants to learn it and I only know fragments of the song.

Thanks,
Dawn

My version:

One day I met,...a real cute guy....from sipping ci...der through a straw.

First cheek to cheek...then side to side...we'd sip some ci...der through
a straw.

The straw did slip...I met his lips...from sipping ci....der through a straw.

Now 14 kids...all call me Mom...from sipping ci....der through a straw.

That's all I can remember. Was there more? What a great song.

I just remembered the last verse!

The moral is....my children dear...don't you sip ci...der through a straw.
The moral is my children dear, don't you sip cider, YOU SIP BEER!

(That was, of course, the favorite line for us)

Here's my fragment...

"Then suddenly...that straw did slip...and we were sipping...lip to lip.
Then suddenly that straw did slip...and we were sipping lip to lip."

There's another verse or two, but I can't remember them. However, since
reading your post, I can't seem to get the song out of my head, so I may
post later.

Wow! Talk about trips down memory lane :-)

This is the version from my childhood. We usually had one
or 2 people sing each line, with the group repeating, and
all sang the repeated verse together.

The cutest boy (the cutest boy)
I ever saw (I ever saw)
Was sippin' ci- (was sippin' ci-)
Der through a straw (der through a straw)
The cutest boy I ever saw, was sippin' ci-der through a straw.

I asked him if
He'd show me how
To sip my ci-
Der through a straw
I asked him if he'd show me how to sip my cider through a straw.,

He said he would
He'd show me how
To sip my ci-
Der through a straw
He said he would, he'd show me how to sip my ci-der through a straw

So cheek to cheek
And jaw to jaw
We sipped our ci-
Der through a straw
So cheek to cheek and jaw to jaw we sipped our cider through a straw

Then suddenly
That straw did slip
And we sipped ci-
Der lip to lip
Then suddenly that straw did slip and we sipped cider lip to lip

That's how I got
My mother-in-law
And fourteen kids
Who call me "Ma"
That's how I got my mother-in-law and fourteen kids who call me "Ma"

The moral of
This story is
Don't sip your ci-
Der through a straw
The moral of this story is - Don't sip your cider through a straw
SIP MILK!

The melody and arrangement (!) are the same as in that other
old chestnut: The other day, I met a bear. Out in the woods -
away out there.

Lori Grzyboski
who can't believe she actually remembered all those words,
let along *sang* them... :)

I remember this lyric between the first and the second that you list:

I asked him if
He'd show me how

To sip some cider through a straw

I asked him if he'd show me how

To sip some cider through a straw.

She said to me
What shall I do
I have no friends

Hi. This is Debbie, using Ken's account.

Here are the words I remember (a few are missing, some are probably
wrong) from Girl Scout camp in the early 70s:

The other day
I met a bear
Out in the woods
Oh way up there
The other day I met a bear, out in the woods, oh way up there

He looked at me
I looked at him
<missing line>
<missing line>
He looked at me, I looked at him <missing lines>

He said to me
"Why don't you run?
I see you ain't
Got any gun"
He said to me, "Why don't you run? I see you ain't got any gun."

And so I ran
Away from there
But right behind
Me came that bear.
And so I ran away from there, but right behind me came that bear.

Ahead of me
I saw a tree
A great big tree
Oh Lordy me!
Ahead of me I saw a tree. A great big tree, oh, Lordy me.

The nearest branch
Was ten feet up.
I'd have to jump
And hope for luck.
The nearest branch was ten feet up. I'd have to jump and hope for luck.

And so I jumped
Into the air.
But I missed that branch
Oh way up there.
And so I jumped into the air, but I missed that branch oh way up there.

Now don't you fret,
Now don't you frown.
'Cause I caught that branch
On the way back down.
Now don't you fret, now don't you frown. 'Cause I caught that branch on the
way back down.

-----------------------

That's all I remember. There may be more.

I remember two versions-from girl scouts, I think

The Cutest Boy...
I ever saw...
was sipping cider...
Through a straw
(Whole thing)
First cheek to cheek...
Then Jaw to jaw....
we sipped our cider...
Through a straw...
(WT)
And now and then...
that straw would slip...
and we'd sip cider....
lip to lip....
(wt)
now 29 kids...
all call me maw...
from sipping cider...
through a straw...
(WT)

The moral of...
this story is...

don't sip your cider...
through a straw...
DRINK MILK!(shouted, amid lots of girl giggles)

and the other one, to the same tune, same call-response style

The littlest worm...
I ever sawe...,
was stuck in side...
my soda straw...
(WT)
He said to me...
don't take a sip..
for if you do...
I'll surely slip...
(WT)
I took a sip...
he went right down..
right through my pipes...
He surely Drowned...
(WT)
Now that is all..
this is the end...
He was my pal...
he was my friend..
(WT-repeated very sadly, with lots of fake crying)

I'm not sure of all the words, but what I recall from long-ago Camp Fire
Girl days is this:

The cutest boy...I ever saw...was sipping ci...der through a straw....

I asked him if...he'd show me how...to sip some ci...der through a straw....

He said of course...he'd show me how...to sip some ci...der through a
straw....

First cheek to cheek...than lip to lip...and then the straw...began to
slip....

That's how I got...my mother-in-law...and 39 kids...to call me ma....

The moral of...this little joke...is don't drink ci...der, just drink COKE!

I suspect there are regional variations :).

And so I met
That bear once more.
