We are excited toexplore biology together this semester. We know these are unprecedented times. It is unfortunatethat we can not meet in person for lab as students often enjoy this hands-on aspect of the course. It brings biology to life. Fortunately, biology is all around us. We created this lab manual to be asinteractive as possible. All you need is everyday items and internet access.Science discovery is a group effort. In the classroom, students explore together. We aim toreplicate a similar online collaborative environment so we can all help each other learn. As such, labs will be carried out as a group in various formats. Labs may have Do-It-Yourself (DIY)experiments (think kitchen science), watching and observing an experiment carried out in avideo, researching data online, exploring your local surroundings or other creative techniques. To help plan in advance, we have listed materials that will be needed for each lab. Remember, often you can split these up amongst your group so it is okay if you do not have all the items.Lastly, if you or your group can not obtain some materials, please inform your instructor for analternative method of completing the assignment.Have fun, explore and enjoy this new way of learning!Biology Instructors at LATTC 3List of materials needed for Biology 3 LabsLab 1: Scientific Method•NoneLab 2: Scientific Measurements•Measuring tape/tool or meter stick or measuring app on phone: Ruler for Android,Measure App on Apple or piece of paper (8.5 x 11) to use as a measuring deviceLab 3: Water Solubility•Water•Oil (ie. vegetable or olive)•Food coloring (liquid or powder such as Kool-Aide or Jello mix)•Dish soap or detergent•Jar with lid•Spoon to stirLab 4: Acids, Bases and pH•NoneLab 5: Organic Substances in Food•Brown paper (ie. paper bag or envelope)•Water•Oil•~ 4 types of drinkable liquids such as milk, juice, vinegar, soda, ketchup, mustard and/orsolid foods with moisture such as apple, cheese, rice, potato chipsLab 6: Microscope•NoneLab 7: Eukaryotic Cell•NoneLab 8: Diffusion and Osmosis•4 slices of potato (~1 inch or 2 cm)•~2 Tablespooons of salt•2 bowlsLab 9: Enzymes in Living Tissues•NoneLab 10: Function of Chlorophyll•None 4Lab 11: Fermentation•NoneLab 12: DNA–The Foundation of Life•NoneLab 13: Cell Cycle and Mitosis•NoneLab 14: Genetic Patterns of Inheritance•2 coinsLab 15: DNA Extraction and Gel ElectrophoresisFor Human DNA Extraction:•2 glasses•Water•Spit•2 teaspoons detergent (ie. dish soap, hand soap, shampoo, laundry detergent)•½ teaspoon Salt•3 drops contact solution or pineapple juice•2 teaspoons rubbing alcohol (chilled in freezer)•Stick (ie. toothpick or popsicle stick)For strawberry DNA Extraction:• Upload your study docs or become a Course Hero member to access this document Upload your study docs or become a Course Hero member to access this document AGS Biology: Lab manual answer key Biology Lab Manual Answer KeyBiology in clear, easy-to-read language Biology is a comprehensive life science program for your reluctant readers and those who require additional help to grasp basic biological and life science concepts.
