If you feel your Facebook profile is too static, Facebook is giving you 7 seconds to work with. You now have the option of ditching your profile picture for a short, looping profile video.

To make a profile video from Facebook's iOS or Android app, go to your profile page and tap your profile picture. On iOS, choose either Take a New Profile Video or Select Profile Video. On Android, the latter option is titled Upload Video or Photo.

Video profiles have been around since last fall for iOS, and with the iOS app, you can trim videos longer than 7 seconds to use as your Facebook profile. With Android, you can't trim videos and must choose a video that is 7 seconds or less. Facebook for iOS also lets you mute the sound of profile videos, the option for which you'll find when trimming your video. With Android, you are stuck with sound for profile videos. When profile videos first arrived on iOS, you were unable to edit videos, so I would expect trimming and muting options to come to Android at some point.

After taking or uploading a video, you can then select a thumbnail from the video as your profile picture. The picture will show up in Facebook's news feed. Only when people visit your profile page will they see your video, which helps people add a some flair to their profiles without making Facebook's newsfeed overly distracting.

Elsewhere in the update is new bio field that lets you add a short, 101-character blurb about yourself and featured photos that let you select the five photos that appear on the mobile version of your profile page. Both of these features are available from your profile page on both mobile and desktop platforms.

Lastly, you can set a temporary Facebook profile picture (but not video) for both iOS and Android. When you select a new photo to use for your profile picture, you'll see a small Make temporary button in the lower-left corner of the Crop screen. Tap on this button and you can select 1 Hour, 1 Day, 1 Week or Custom.

Add a touch of magic to your profile

How to make your Facebook profile picture a video

Facebook has recently introduced a new feature that lets you use short videos for you profile picture, giving you the ability to enliven your profile page when people visit.

Mercifully the short video clips will only play when people visit your profile – so newsfeeds won't get clogged up with animated images.

The moving profile pictures can also be used temporarily, so you could use them to show you blowing out candles on a cake on your birthday, or cheering on your team during sporting events.

Creating an animated Facebook profile is pretty straightforward – however at the moment only people using the Facebook app on Apple devices can make use of the feature.

It's also currently only available in California and the UK at the moment, though hopefully that will change soon.

Step 1: Load your profile

On your iPhone open up the Facebook app (opens in new tab) and view your profile page. You can do this by tapping on the More icon on the bottom-right hand corner of the screen and then tapping your name. You can also open your profile by tapping on your current profile picture next to where it says "What's on your mind?".

Step 2: Change your profile picture

On the mobile app you profile picture is displayed prominently in the upper middle of the screen. On the bottom right-hand corner of your current profile picture an icon will switch between a camera and video camera. Tap this icon and select "Take a New Profile Video" to film and upload the video.

Step 3: Record the video

On the next screen press the big red button to begin recording. A three second countdown will appear giving you time to prepare before the photo is taken. Your iPhone will then record 7 seconds of video – so you'll need to get creative to make an entertaining short video!

Step 4: Preview video and select thumbnail

Once you've recorded the video clip you will get a preview video the loops, letting you see how it will look when people visit your page. If you're happy with the video tap Next and then select the thumbnail you want to show.

This image will be shown as your profile photo when the video doesn't play – such as on people's News Feeds. When you're happy with the result, tap save, and your short video will be uploaded as your profile picture.

Step 5: Your video is now live

Your profile picture is now a moving image and will play whenever someone visits your profile page either through the Facebook iOS app, or via the website. Visitors using the Android app won't be able to see it just yet – but a note on the app says the feature is coming soon.
