  • What is the cost to renew a driver's license in Florida?

I need to renew my Florida driver’s license, but money is a bit tight right now. I still have six months until renewal, but I want to time it right so the cost fits into my budget. How much does it cost to renew a driver’s license in Florida?

Budgeting is always important, but fortunately, a driver’s license renewal won’t break the bank. The cost to renew a driver’s license in Florida is $48 and the license is valid for eight years from the date of application.

To renew your driver’s license in Florida, you have two options:

  • Renew online at the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles website, found here: https://mydmvportal.flhsmv.gov/Home/en/Account/Landing.
  • Go into any Florida DMV. You can either book an appointment online or walk in when you some free time.

However, you cannot renew your driver’s license online if you do not have a REAL ID-compliant license. To tell if your current license is REAL ID-compliant, look for a yellow and white star in the upper right-hand corner of your license. If you see one, you can renew your license online. If not, you need to visit your local DMV.

ORLANDO, Fla. – News 6 traffic safety expert Trooper Steve Montiero answers viewer questions about the rules of the road every week, helping Orlando-area residents become better drivers by being better educated.

He said if you’re new to Florida, the initial application for a driver’s license will be made in-person.

“It will cost you $48 for your Class-E or learner’s license. A Commercial license is $75 and then if you add endorsements, they are $7 each. An endorsement would be something like a heavy equipment or motorcycle certification,” Trooper Steve said.

If you get your driver’s license through a tax collector’s office, he said there is a $6.25 service fee that will be added.
