Control optical audio with tv remote lg

  • #1

Hi
Apologies if this has already been answered. I did search but couldn't find anything specific.

I have just bought the LG 49SJ810V 4K Ultra TV. I want have the audio come out of the TV's internal speaker, and simultaneously sent to my hifi. This is possible by using the optical audio out (and a little DAC to turn it into an analogue signal for the amplifier), and the appropriate setting in the TV's audio settings.

But when I do that, the volume of the optical audio is not controllable from the TV remote. I would like the remote to control both the TV internal speaker and the optical audio at the same time. Is this possible?

Thanks in advance

Hi @roscola,

You should be able to find the option you require by visiting the following: -

All Settings -> Sound -> Sound Out. And under the 'Simultaneous Sound Out With Internal TV Speaker' option, select: 'Internal TV Speaker + Audio Out (Optical)'.

Cheers

Thanks, @SeeMoreDigital.

I do have that setting on and it works in as far as I get sound from both. But the volume buttons on the remote control only change the volume of the internal speaker, not the volume of the optical audio out. I was hoping to control the volume of both simultaneously from the remote.

TV channels with HE-AAC audio are typically transcoded to a Dolby Digital bit-stream before being passed via the 'Optical Output'.

Due to the way bit-stream audio works, their streams can't be adjusted 'volume-wise'....

However, if you visit: All Settings -> Sound -> DTV Audio Settings' and select: 'MPEG' (instead of Auto) the TV will pass an PCM audio stream to your amplifier via the 'Optical Output' - which can be adjusted 'volume-wise'.

By-the-way... What kind of amplifier do you have. Stereo or surround sound?

Cheers

Thank you. Unfortunately that didn't work. I also tried changing 'Settings > Sound > Sound Out > Digital Sound Out' from Auto to PCM but that still didn't work.

It's a plain old stereo amplifier. It doesn't have an optical input of its own so I'm using a digital>analogue converter like this one.

I see.... It would appear that that little device is creating a fixed (non adjustable) output.

If your model of LG TV has a 'headphones' output your only other option is to buy a long '3.5mm stereo to stereo phono' lead and use the 'Wired Headphones' output...

Yes, I guess that's the only choice. Hopefully it won't do what most pieces of equipment do and automatically disable the internal speaker when the headphones are plugged in. Fingers crossed.

Thanks so much for taking an interest in my problem, I really appreciate the time you've taken.

The LG's are pretty flexible in this regard...

Again, if you visit: All Settings -> Sound -> Sound Out. Under the 'Simultaneous Sound Out With Internal TV Speaker' options, you will find an: 'Internal TV Speaker + Wired Headphones' option.

Sadly that didn't work either. I can have sound out of both this way, but the TV remote control only controls the internal speaker volume, not the headphones. Sigh.

I'm not sure how you're supposed to control the headphone volume if you're actually using headphones and the whole thing seems very weird to me; I cannot be alone in wanting to do this and it seems like such a simple ask. But anyway, I'll have to live with it.

Thanks again for your efforts to help me.

Have you remembered to set the 'DTV Audio Settings' to 'MPEG' (instead of Auto)?

Edit: Oh yes... I've just connected a little speaker to the headphone output and can now see that a separate 'Headphone Volume' control option appears... Bummer!

Hah, yes, I've just found that. Ah well, that's that. I guess it means I can change the volume without getting off my backside ... just not quite as convenient as I'd hoped!

Can TV remote control optical audio?

As long as your soundbar is connected to your TV with either an optical cable or HDMI via ARC, you can control the volume and mute the soundbar using your Samsung TV's remote.

Can you control volume through optical cable LG?

You can adjust the volume with the LG TV remote control if the TV is connected to the product with an optical cable. You can only do so on a TV that supports the LG TV Sound Sync function.

Can I control my Soundbar with my LG TV remote?

Your LG Sound Bar is equipped with SIMPLINK technology that allows some of its functions to be controlled by your TV's remote control when connected via HDMI. Some of the controllable functions include powering your Sound Bar on/off and controlling the volume.
