When it comes to your vehicle’s engine, nothing is more important than providing it with routine maintenance. Oil changes are essential for a healthy, well-functioning vehicle.

Did you know that a vehicle’s engine is made up of many moving parts? To avoid damage to your engine, and have it functioning properly, all of those parts need to stay well lubricated.

Over time, the oil that is circulating and lubricating your engine will break down and can become contaminated with particles of dirt and dust from the environment as well as the engine. As oil breaks down, it loses its natural thickness or viscosity, causing it to lose its ability to lubricate.

If your oil is contaminated with debris, your vehicle’s engine cannot properly lubricate all the moving parts; in return, your engine will not be able to properly function. Making sure your vehicle has clean and sufficient amounts of oil is an easy way to prevent too much friction and overheating of the engine. Routine oil changes keep your engine clean and can also help with better gas mileage. Without proper maintenance, all that dirt and debris we talked about earlier can build up inside your vehicle’s engine causing friction. Friction will cause poor engine performance.

When should you get an oil change?

Typically, it’s recommended that you take your car after 3,000 to 5,000 miles for an oil change. Depending on the type of oil you use, your vehicle, and how much you drive will help you better understand the frequency of routine oil changes. A few signs your vehicle is low on oil include burning smells, clunking sounds and low engine performance. Check over the owner’s manual for your vehicle to be sure the oil is changed at the proper intervals recommended by your manufacturer.

Routine maintenance is essential for the life of your vehicle; without it, your vehicle could end up having more problems and a shorter life span.

3 Reasons You Should Use Synthetic Motor Oil

February 12, 2016   |   Author: Fast Lube Plus   |   No comments   |   Categories: Uncategorized   |   Tags: 3 Reasons You Should Use Synthetic Motor Oil • synthetic motor oil

Cars have come a long way from the rattly metal boxes of yesteryear. Even the most humble economy box features advanced technology.

So it’s a bit strange that many car owners still use the same old gunky oil that their forefathers did. Many new cars call for synthetic oil, oil that is man-made from both petroleum and other materials. While it might sound like marketing mumbo-jumbo, there’s a reason manufacturers are making the switch. Even for your old car, synthetic oil offers some useful benefits!

Better Engine Protection

Synthetic oil has been used for years in professional racing for its duration at high temperatures. Now you can buy economy cars with race-tested technologies, like the direct injected and turbocharged VW Golf.

These new technologies can generate more heat, heat that can overwhelm old-fashioned fossil oil. Synthetic oil, however, has no problem handling it! This comes in handy in traffic jams during those hot Triangle summers.

On the cold side of things, synthetic oil also gives better lubrication during cold starts. During a cold start, conventional oil is thicker and takes longer to enter the engine. This brief lack of lubrication can add up over time, shortening the life of your vehicle. Most synthetic oils lessen this problem by staying slick at low temperatures.

Longer Service Intervals

If you travel a lot, you’re probably accustomed to frequent oil changes. Most conventional oil needs to be changed every 3,000 to 6,000 miles, depending on operating conditions. It’s an expense and inconvenience that adds up.

Synthetic oils retain their strength longer, so long that on some vehicles (including the VW Golf mentioned above) you don’t have to change your oil for 10,000 miles! While the initial cost of a synthetic oil change is higher, you save money over time by not having to change it as often.

Better Fuel Efficiency

A high friction, heavy oil (like 10W-40 or 20W-50) is harder for your engine to move against. This is good because it provides protection, but bad because it can have an effect on your car’s fuel economy. Synthetic oil often contains additives that reduce this friction, meaning it maintains its slippery qualities while protecting your engine.

Long-term, synthetic oil also runs cleaner. This prevents the gunky deposits that years of conventional oil usage leave inside your engine, gradually reducing its fuel economy. Note that synthetic’s effect on fuel economy also depends on your engine and car, but you may experience a 2-3% increase!

Is full synthetic oil good for all cars?

Modern synthetic oil is safe to use in all types of vehicles, ranging from new purchases to classics to aging not-so-classics. The idea that synthetic oil could harm old engines probably comes from a time before synthetic oils had been extensively tested.

Is full synthetic oil actually full synthetic?

As long as it only uses Groups III, IV or V base oils, it's a synthetic oil. That being the case, the terms “100% synthetic” and “full synthetic” describe the same thing.

Is premium full synthetic oil good?

The consensus—the general agreement among automotive experts—is that premium synthetic oils are superior lubricants. In this article, the synthetic oils discussed are specifically identified as premium synthetic oils because, like with every class of consumer product, there are varying levels of quality.

What percentage is full synthetic oil?

Full Synthetic oil is 95% to 100% oil made from chemicals. Some full synthetic oils may have 5% conventional oils to help with engine wear. If you plan on performing oil changes every 3 months or 3,000 miles, then conventional oil is recommended.
