It’s good to have, yes. I’ll disagree with most here. It’s punchier with the mixamp in my opinion.

It works over USB. Regarding the EQ presets, that’s now done through Dolby Access, and quite frankly is just as good. Turn on Atmos, turn off Dolby on the mixamp, set your EQ and away you go.

Most people say Optical sounds better. Sorry, but I disagree. Directional =/= 3D and the built in Dolby virtualizer w/ optical just makes everything sound reverberated to hell. People say optical sounds warmer. Bullshit. USB sounds just as warm. It sounds exactly like you want it to because you choose what you want out of the EQ.

Like most subreddits, you’ll find here that the people that hang out tend to hang out to collectively bitch about Astros because they haven’t released new equipment without optical. You’ll find the arguments against USB completely bullshit.

My expectations were very high for this headset. Other than the fact I dropped some serious coin for it, I believed the hype about it being the best headset I could ever hope to own. Look, it sound is literally just average played through PC or XBOX. Maybe a little better than a generic 20 dollar headset but not a whole lot better. Certainly not Earth shattering or groundbreaking. I can name 4 or 5 other brands I've owned that were stars above better than this. That said, I really bought it for the mixamp. In my opinion the mixamp turns this from a dumpster fire of a sale to a much more manageable train wreck. The mix amp, does what it says its gonna do. I mixes and it amplifies but does NEITHER well enough to impress me. You can play all day long with the software and jog radials trying to get things just right but it never sounds great. Now, please let this be a word of warning. This thing is heavy if you make the mistake of buying the upgrade mod kit with noise cancelling mic and heavy as heck ear pieces and cushions. Just don't do it. People were constantly complaining about my room fan noise keying my mic on discord even with the fan halfway across the loft. No matter how much time I spent on sensitivity settings, I was either constantly keying or clipped. There was not a perfect collection of settings that would make it work as it should. After a couple of hours I'm constantly repositioning it to keep it from causing pressure points on my hairline. Just wears really heavy. I originally purchased it, along with the noise cancelling mod kit at the end of March, by the middle of July it was broken. Not from drops (never been dropped) not from mishandling or overuse but from regular every day use. Hard to describe this but the ear cushion frames connect to the silver rod that is connected to the head piece that stretches over your head then connects similarly to the other ear piece. These connections on the silver rod allow for the ear to slightly rotate using pressure around the rod so you can adjust the ear piece to the angle of your head. Hard to picture, I know but in essence the ear piece is held to the silver rod by a clamp of sorts that has a screw through the middle that screws through the clamp, through the rod and into the internal flange of the the clamp that is positioned inside the silver rod. So, the tighter the screw, the more pressure on the clamp and the tighter the ear piece gets. Without that screw, the ear piece has no pressure and and cant stay firm which makes the entire headset loose and unwearable. Please just trust me when I tell you, your massive outlay of coin for this headset and the mod kit relies on that single screw. So... sitting in my office chair dodging complaints about my clipping, this time in Zoom btw and my headset falls off my head. Yep, through normal use that screw fell out and is all but impossible to put back in. It screws in but it never stays in place and the headset wont tighten. So, yeah, 4 months after dropping this kind of coin I will have to have it repaired. Now here comes the worst part. Support. I cannot tell you how difficult these people are to reach. There is no support number, no live chat just a web form where you provide your information and hope someone gets back to you. They never do and you MUST follow up with them and complain before anyone takes the ticket and starts working it. I have had to send picture after picture and describe MULTIPLE times what is wrong with it. I'm almost 3 weeks into originally contacting them now and I don't have an RMA number yet, don't even have an acknowledgement that they are even remotely interesting in fixing it. So, 3 weeks on conference calls with my old "trusty" $20 dollar headset. Let me be clear they will NEVER simply pick up a ticket and respond as if you are being helped. You make responses or send info and they will do NOTHING until you email again and complain. Simple things like explaining where to find a specific serial number takes 3 days. I know you want to trust this company, yeah, their marketing is good and they have allot of hype but my hardware is literally junk and their support is akin to asking monkeys in suits to provide quality customer service. In terms of “gaming headset” sure Astro is good competition. In terms of actual sound, comfort and quality? Not at all.

I’m no audiophile nor an expert but I did have the older Gen 2 Astros, Logitech G Pro X and Beyerdyanmic Custom Game to switch and compare between for about two weeks. This is what I got:

Comfort:
NOTE: I have a small head, I mean small and small ears that don’t pop out too much. If you’re at my end of the spectrum these Astro A40 TR will feel heavy and clunky. The band that rests at the top of your head is plush but not dense and after about 2 hours maybe 3, I had to start shifting the headset because it started to really bother the top of my head. The earcups for me though were fine, the fabric was soft, breathable my ears didn’t sweat did get warm but nothing to really complain about. My ears did not touch the speakers inside either. Though many reviews says the padding is great it is not. Astro have gone cheaper with the cloth headband and earcups. My Astro A40 Gen 2 have way denser padding and still don’t give as much as these new ones. (I’ll touch more on this under quality if you want to skip there.)

Sound:
NOTE: Games used, MW 2019, RB6, Tomb Raider 2&3, RE2, D2, Fortnite, Apex Legends.
I tried two things out, Astro A40 TR with the mixamp and without Mixamp. Without the mixamp? I can not with good conscience recommend them. Theyre just loud and at times just hurt my ears with certain sounds especially high pitched. (Think of a SMG going off right next to you and max volume.) They’re very much “boom” heavy. You’ll hear explosions, missles, gunshots awesomely. But reloads? Footsteps? Crouching? Running? Walking? Gets lost in everything else. With the mixamp? You still get everything I mentioned above but you can control the “loudness” of it a lot better with the EQ’s they give you or what you prefer. But at the end of day it really didn’t help, whenever too much action starts happening the sounds just start to mesh together and it’s hard to decipher from what. (Modern Warfare was the absolute worst of the bunch. This may be more of a game audio issue but no matter what EQ, what game audio set or what I set the volume levels too, Modern Warfare was always just a mess of sounds. Whoever says they can pinpoint precisely footsteps playing this game is lying.) Now when playing story based games, the audio is good. I want to hear everything, no need for such things as footsteps or reloads. You can hear small details and when action starts you can feel it. I don’t have much more to say here because I got the same results with all the headsets I have and that’s more to do with mixamp then the headsets honestly. But what about the 7.1 surround?

7.1 Surround:
Is only good for RPGs, single player games type, ONLY IF* they’re made with 7.1 surround in mind. Which is why I played RE2, D2 and Tomb Raider. Tomb Raider and RE2 were great. D2 I honestly didn’t notice much and in a looter shooter I don’t need nor want a lot of sound buts that’s my preference. ANY OTHER GAME, with 7.1 surround on is going to just sound thin and echoing. Many reviews here say that and it’s 500% true. It doesn’t help with shooters or single players. It just drowns the quality of the sound down. Imagine having tin-cans over your ear the entire time your playing your game. PS: Having Dolby atmos activated (they’ll make you download the Dolby App) will give you a sound preset/EQ make sure to go into the app and switch it off because it voids/changes the EQs on the amp.

The Mixamp:
It doesn’t have an off button. It’s 130 dollars alone and it doesn’t have an off button. It is my biggest gripe and I don’t get the decision behind it. If the lights on the mixamp shut off when you turned off the console then I wouldn’t mind, but it doesn’t. The nobs, The dots for each EQ, Xbox/PC lettering and 7.1 surround/stereo indicators all light up. Quite brightly. Second thing not as big it doesn’t have a mute button. If you have inline mute cable it doesn’t matter but if you don’t it sucks. The quality of the amp is great, it has rubber bottom so it doesn’t slip and slide everywhere. Nobs are clean and sturdy, game/chat nob has a notch at exactly 50 you’ll hear/feel click into place. You only have 4 presets and you can’t change them off the fly if your on console. You’ll also need to do a firmware update so not plug and play. For me it wasn’t difficult or Inconvenient but for some it very well may be. The nobs on top will be red if the cord isn’t fully connected or isn’t compatible. THE OPTICAL PORT/CABLE. I have no idea why no one mentions this but you really have to push/pull the cable with a lot more force than I thought comfortable/necessary. I really thought I’d break it with the force I was using. But alas, you won’t its just really tough. As an Xbox user and Xbox users out there, because Microsoft doesn’t allow all USB to work on Xbox you’re limited in amps, Astro Mixamp is your best bet in terms versatility and compatibility. I also hate side tone, the default on the amp is 50 and set it to 0. Make sure you put the mic mode at streamer, if not you’ll cut in and out sometimes.

Quality:
I was honestly disappointed because I really enjoyed my Gen 2 Astros, loved them. And after 4 years I can’t tell a huge difference between the Gen 2’s and Gen 4’s. The actual cloth padding has been downgraded. It’s less dense, gives in much easier and thinner. I was able to pinch and pull the material away from the padding on the Gen 4’s without much effort. This is more noticeable on the headband, which they’ve made a smidgen wider much shorter in length. Wish I had remembered to take photos. After 2-4 hours of use the headband on the astros gives in and your head is now essentially on plastic. There was maybe half an inch between my head and the plastic with the cloth padding. I’m assuming they did this to sell more of the mod kits which are a whopping 60 dollars plus tax, and you can just buy headband/ear cups replacement it’s always the full kit. So nearly 70 dollars, half the cost of the headset to change the material and it turns it into a closed back headset with noise cancellation. (If you don’t understand what that means look it up not being rude it’s just a whole another thing to get into. But in really simple terms it changes the way the headset sounds in gaming and you get no other options. This may be good for some or bad, but having only one type of modkit sucks, regardless).
These Astro A40’s have very little clamping force and after time they’ll probably spread enough to where’s there’s none. Again I have small head so these will feel better for those who have average or larger heads. Sound wasn’t much different compared to previous generations. I definitely tried my hardest to find a big difference between Gen 2/Gen4 there wasn’t.

TL; DR: In short if you have/had any other A40’s you’ve had these too. When I’m able to plug in my Gen 2’s into the amp and notice only a small difference the 266 (tax included) dollar price tag doesn’t sit well. The Amp is better value over the headset. At 150 plus tax, the headset is not up to par. They should honestly sit at 100-120. The amp is 130 plus tax and it should also be about 80-100. Paying nearly 300 dollars for subpar quality left me so disappointed. The look and build of the A40’s is the same. Sound is similar. If you wanted to upgrade get the amp, maybe even get it used, save a few bucks and have the amp boost what you already have or get a better headset and use it with this amp. They don’t say it but you don’t have to use an Astro headset with the amp. Just make sure it has a 3.5 mm jack.

They are not worth 250 at all.

So I bought this as a renewed product. It was delivered in excellent shape and on time. I have read about this headset for some time and I was very excited about it when it came. I hooked it to my PC to download the Astro Command center per the instructions. After this I saw that I had to download the newest firmware. I attempted to do this several times. Each time I came up with this error code “ Bootloader mode detected.” After several attempts I did what we all do, I YouTubed it. Turns out that my MixAmp pro is not supported by Dolby Atmos newest Firmware for the XBox series S even thought they claim it is. The older version of Firmware works just fine for me thought and I was able to get everything to work just fine.
Now to the mic, it’s absolutely horrible! I like that you can switch sides easily , but the one that came with it is just not working right. My team can’t hear me, so I just unhooked it and use my stand alone blue Yeti. I also prefer a different headset. All in all if I could do it o er I would get just the MixAmp and not the headset. I think it’s uncomfortable and the mic is just not a good piece of equipment

I bought this to use with my Elgato to record gaming footage on my XB1 and record my mic audio + in game chat audio, and it did great, but after 1 month it stopped working, everything from my PC to Xbox 1 detects the amp pro but my microphone never registers. If I unplug it from my xbox and replug it, it'll work for 3ish minutes then disconnect again (the headset works fine)

I see this is happening quite frequently and hasn't found a fix, very disappointed especially at this price point & that astro is a big name in gaming.

Not sure what’s with all the negative reviews but these set of headphones are amazing they’re are a 10/10. They work both with pc and the Xbox including the new Xbox series x. They hookup to the pc for updates and firmware upgrades as well as tuning the sound. If you own an Xbox series X. Please note. Plug into your pc after you download the Astro command center. If using Windows 10 make sure you get the app from the windows store. Then turn the switch to “pc” mode. Plug into your computer and it will do a firmware update. Once done go to Xbox and switch to “Xbox” mode. Download the “Dolby atmos” app. Yes it comes free with a key for it. Then you might notice the mic doesn’t work after you assign it. That’s okay. Do a restart by pressing and holding the Xbox button. Once restarted voila and enjoy.

Perfect for those games that require a good headset to hear footsteps. Can easily pinpoint where other players are by the sounds of their foot steps with this headset and mix amp. I also love the feature where I can change volume of game sounds or voice sounds on the fly with the mixamp. I find it is a little more expensive then I liked to pay for a headset but just by the feel and quality of this I'm expecting this headset to last for years.

I tried the A40 TR + MixAmp version and also bought the Mod kit to have the best experience and here is what I think :

Tried on PC with the latest update from Astro Command Center

Pros :
- Solid materials
- Comfy
- Really good Bass
- Easy to configure
- Modular
- Nice to be able to change audio presets and create custom ones

Cons :
- The audio is kind of muffled compared to other headsets , for me the logitech g pro sounds better and have a better precision and cost 150$ less and that has a huge impact on FPS games. Playing games like PUBG , Rainbow Six and Escape from tarkov and I wasnt able to tell from which directions I heard gunshots or footsteps
- Only works on PC + current gen consoles , you need an adapter for the PS5
- Not worth the price

I bought this after breaking my Steelseries Arctis Pro and thought it would be the same or better for that price tag and I was so wrong. I returned it and bought the steelseries arctis pro wireless again
