SNAP Extra Payments

Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) emergency, the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS) has been approved  for a SNAP waiver from the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS).

This waiver allows DHS to issue one-time issuances (OTI) to all SNAP recipient households that were receiving benefits in the months of March 2020 through November 2022 to bring their SNAP budget amount to the maximum available amount for their household size. A SNAP household can only receive a benefit for a month in which they received SNAP benefits. For example:

  • If you received benefits in February 2021 only, you will receive an OTI for February only.
  • If you received benefits in March 2021 only, you will receive an OTI for March only.
  • If you received benefits in February and March 2021, you will receive an OTI in February for February and another OTI in March for March.

FNS has approved additional issuances through May 2021, but with some modifications. For April, a SNAP household will receive an extra benefit in the amount needed to bring them up to the maximum or for 50 percent of the maximum benefit, whichever is more. This includes households that would not normally receive an extra benefit because they were already receiving the maximum. FNS has also approved issuances under these same requirements for the period of September 11, 2020 through March 2021. If you got SNAP benefits during this time period, you will get an extra payment in early May or early June, if the amount you received in each month from September 2020 through March 2021 was less than 50 percent of the maximum benefit for your household size or if you were already receiving the maximum benefit.

For May and any future issuances, FNS has provided new guidance. Starting in May 2021, a SNAP household will receive an extra benefit in the amount needed to bring them up to the maximum benefit for their household size or $95, whichever is greater. This includes households that are receiving the maximum benefit for their household size already. The $95 minimum benefit is regardless of household size. For example, the maximum benefit for a single person household is $234. If a single person household is receiving $175 per month in their regular SNAP benefit, they will receive an OTI for $95. If a single person household is receiving $100 per month in their regular SNAP benefit, they will receive an OTI for $134.
