:word: Different Shocks, Skidplates, Stickers, and (depending on the year and vehicle options) Gears and LSD. Most of the newer 4x4's have open Diffs, unless they were ordered with the G80 LSD, where as the Z71's come standard with the G80 LSD. Oh, and the NBS Z71's have a big ass aluminum driveshaft, whereas the 4x4's dont. I think thats it...

My 2X4 crew cab has the big drive shaft. But mine's a Z85. So I don't know if that's why or not. I really don't know what a Z85 is really. Someone told me it was some kind of towing package thing with different leafs.

Mine is a 4x4 "off road" - says so in the pin striping, but I have the big ass aluminum driveshaft, but still the stupid plastic skid plate - for now.

That big aluminum driveshaft has a wall thickness of like .083, its good for handling the torque down the centerline, but should you ever have a foriegn object touch it its going to dent and then rip to peices.

The G80 is not standard on a Z71, really its just shocks, a skidplate and some bling bling stickers. The nice thing is the stickers give you an extra 5hp a peice and Ill take all the stickerpower I can get.

Z85=heavy duty tow pkg.

Z71 is just a combo pkg of options that can be ordered on a regular 4x4. So, potentially, your friend is right. Skid plates, shocks, driveshaft, air cleaner, etc....

The Z71 package is skid plates, shocks, and stickers.

Gears, tire size, wheels, etc are totally independent of the Z71 package. Yes, they are commonly on trucks that also have the Z71 package, but they are NOT part of the package.

The driveshaft is not affected by the presence (or lack) of the Z71 package. The driveshaft on a particular truck is based totally upon the cab, bed, and drive configuration.

On another note, what the fuck is a "Rapper/Mechanic"?

"high capacity air cleaner" I don't remember if that comes with the Z-71 pkg or the Towing pkg... One or the other. But as bggrnchevy said, with the stickers AND the taller air cleaner, at least 10 more horsepower.

And write s l o w e r.

If I remember correctly, the so-called "high capacity" air cleaner was added to the Z71 package in the '99. In reality, the air cleaner is no different than any other. Its just a different part number, but the filters themselves are the same size. There is no difference in performance. And once you have to replace the stock air filter when it gets dirty, its a moot point.

Z71 means absolutely nothing. Nothing at all, I tell you. Except for stickers and chitty skidplates. However, bgrenchevy (or whatever, I can never get his name right) is correct in that the Z71 stickers add 5 hp. The "4x4" stickers are only good for 2 hp.

Stickerpower is where it's at. :rocking:

Ive never understood the whole z71 decal thing. Wahoo, your truck has different shocks, some shitty skins, and now a shitty ugly decal. 2 of the 3 things don't work with a lift, and after a lift, having that decal makes you look like a douche IMO since you don't technically have much left on the z71 package. It used to be that anything u saw that had the z71 rpo code was a 4x4, but now GM killed that too.

BTW, GM started the z71 RPO code back in the 70s. They didn't start tossin on those decals till like 92-93 I believe, so theres tons of z71 packaged trucks runnin around that you wouldn't realize...

The RPO code Z71 didnt start until 1988. The decals started in 1989.

But it doesnt really matter.

To us truck folk, no we don't understand it. But to others its a status symbol, my brother in law knows very little about trucks, he just bought an 04 Z and had the dealership put stickers on it before he bought it. One of my best friends who knows nothing about cars or trucks, still thinks that Z-71 means its an extended cab 4 wheel drive. And to many people from where I'm from, it is some kind of status symbol, you aint cool unless yo truck is a Z-71. Don't mean shit to me, I took my stickers off about 3 hours after I picked up the truck at the dealer.

Is Z71 only 4X4?

Z71 colorado/canyons can be either 4X4 or 2WD. 2WD Z71's have torsion bar suspension. Non Z71 trucks that are 2WD are non torsion bar. Non Z71 trucks that are 4X4 are torsion bar.

What does the Z71 package include?

This off-road package comes with a metal underbody shield, all-terrain tires, a high-capacity air filter, Hill Descent Control, an off-road suspension with Rancho® shocks, a two-speed transfer case, and an automatic locking rear differential.

What makes a Z71 different?

The Z71 package includes Rancho brand shocks, which provide better suspension for bumpy trails and other rough terrain. An underbody shield and brushed metal sill plates also protect against all those bumps along the way.
