Mike Urban: West Reading Ice 'N Spice festival draws crowds to town

Jan. 29—Temperatures in the teens on Saturday kept most people in Berks County indoors, but that chilly weather turned out to be just right for the fifth annual West Reading Ice 'N Spice Festival.

The event, which is being staged downtown between the 400 and 700 blocks of Penn Avenue, began Friday and wraps up Sunday.

Several thousand attended during the first two days, organizers said.

Among the highlights were demonstrations by two renowned ice carvers who created 36 ice sculptures with chain saws, and those who attended enjoyed the show they put on.

On Saturday David Smith of Columbus, Ohio, cut through a 300-pound block of ice to reveal a Yoda sculpture as a crowd shot video and took pictures.

Among those who came out were Kim Price and her wife, Erika Price, of Fleetwood, who were impressed by the demonstration.

"He's awesome," Kim said. "It's fun to watch."

Both women said they visit to West Reading regularly because they enjoy the businesses, and were glad to support an event that brings more attention to them.

Rod and Debbie Hannahoe of Exeter Township also praised the event, and said it was worth dealing with the frigid temperatures.

"It's not like you can see this type of thing in June," Rod said of the ice sculpting.

Smith teamed with Danny Kissel of Cumberland County — who is also a nationally known pumpkin carver — to create the three dozen ice sculptures.

Included in Friday's entertainment was a live fire dance by The Hoop Mistresses, and throughout the weekend restaurants are offering spicy dishes to fit the festival theme.

Event organizer Mark Woodward, who owns the West Reading Tavern, said the festival was created five years ago to help downtown businesses through their slowest time of the year following the holidays and before the end of winter.

He said it's been successful for those businesses not just for the customers they get during Ice 'N Spice weekend, but because those visitors include many making their first trip downtown and who enjoy themselves enough to return.

"We get a lot of new people come in," he said.

The festival's hours on Sunday are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Oil prices have been all over the place this year. WTI, the primary U.S. oil price benchmark, started 2022 at around $75 a barrel before rocketing over $120 a barrel following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The move could keep a floor under crude prices and potentially push them higher depending on demand and other supplies.

The tables have turned on a sector particularly sensitive to cycles; after seeing outsized growth during the pandemic, and despite the global chip shortage, waning demand has seen many in the segment hit hard.
