Tribute to the wonderful teacher, colleague and friend Michael Issitt
It is with great sadness that I am writing to tell you that our colleague – Michael Issitt – has passed away. Mr Issitt had been suffering with Covid-19 and although medical workers did all that they could to support him, he has sadly died. Our thoughts are with his family at this tragic time.

We know that many children may want to have a way of saying ‘goodbye’ to Mr. Issitt and there are so many ways to do this that are personal and meaningful whilst still observing current guidelines about your safety and that of others. Please email your tributes to with your tribute and we will upload it for you. This will become a permanent and lasting tribute for Mr Issitt’s family and the whole school community. When the school re-opens, we will have a celebration of Mr. Issitt’s life as a school family.

Mike – we will miss you so much. Thank you for everything you did for our community: the onion bhajis at staff meetings, the wonderful art displays in the hall and the campfire songs. It was our privilege to know you. Cheryl

Miss Brake

Mike Issitt – An absolute legend

I first met Mike just over 16 years ago when I arrived at Prince Rock as headteacher and I gave him a permanent full time contract. I will always fondly remember Mike for food, Art & DT and cows in Cape Town!

His staff Insets were legendary and aside from showing us how to teach Art and DT properly, we also learnt how to make onion bhajis, pizza and ice cream!

Mike’s amazing ‘tree art’ adorned the fences of the school for many years and this alongside his leadership of drama and regular work with the ‘Theatre Royal Playhouse Project’ earned him and Amanda a place in the final of the TES ‘Art and Drama Team of the Year’. He should have won!!

Mike was also absolutely central to all three of Prince Rock’s outstanding Ofsted inspection successes, but his leadership of the 2012 DT inspection really was something special.

No matter what wonders he performed in the classroom, Mike’s guitar playing in assembly and his leading the year 3 camping trips will remain in our children’s memories for ever.

I was lucky enough to spend a week with Mike in Cape Town, South Africa in our linked school a few years ago. My favourite memory of Mike involves him stepping in to teach a class of year 10 and 11 secondary pupils how to model with clay superbly, while a herd of cows walked past the classroom with Table Mountain in the background!

I have such wonderful memories and I feel really blessed to have known Mike and to have worked with him.

Mr Issitt was my favourite teacher – he was always kind and made us all laugh a lot. I enjoyed doing lots of art with him, especially where we painted reflections of towns in water. He also took us camping in Year 3. This was my first time away from home, but he made it much less scary and we all had a great time being in the countryside singing round the campfire eating marshmallows.

Holly Hanley

Mike was a lovely man who knew how to light up a room with his witty jokes. Not only was he a fantastic teacher but also a friend to us all. Mike was a massive part of Prince Rock and he will be missed dearly by everyone!

Miss O'Brien

Words can’t describe how lovely you were. Thank you for looking out for me and especially for the pickled onions! Much love xx

Mrs Benson

I've never had a negative thought or word for Mike. In fact, when I think of him at all it's usually with a smile. I'll miss his chuckle in the staffroom, his knack of using a double entendre that set everybody off in fits of laughter.

The kids that didn't know him thought he was scary (maybe that beard), but the ones that did, loved him and, like my daughter, remember their time with him with fondness.

It's not often you can say this in life, but Mike was genuinely one in a million, and I will miss him.

Mrs Bishop

Mr Issitt was the first class teacher I worked alongside. He taught me all of the things about teaching you cannot learn at University. The importance of laughter, friendship, love for the children, kindness and going with the flow! Camping was the highlight of my time with him and I will never forget the memories made and the laughter shared there. I know the children won't either. Thank you for all you have given to me and the children over the years. Miss Upton x

Miss Upton

Mike, staff meetings won’t be the same without your jokes cracking everyone up. I’ve loved catching up with you about your family who you loved dearly and your latest ventures: art, your allotment, cooking or more recently helping the homeless. Such a talented man and above all kind and caring. You always asked if I was ok, I wish you were ok Mike. We’ll miss you.

Ms Bevan

When I think of Mike, I have several vivid memories which will always bring a smile to my face. His ability to tell a tale, his wicked grin, his incredible artistic talent and his colourful jumpers are but a few of the wonderful things that made Mike so unique. There are many Prince Rock children, past and present, who have benefitted profoundly from his teaching.

My fondest memory is of Mike stood proudly in an art gallery following the completion of his masters degree. With a drink in hand, surrounded by his family, friends and colleagues he gave a humble speech about his artwork. He looked truly content and full of thanks.

Prince Rock has always been an incredibly special school because of the people that make it feel like family. He was a dear colleague, a kind friend and a passionate teacher. Prince Rock will not be the same without him.

Mike - we love you, we miss you and we will always remember you.

Miss McMillan

We will not see your smile

We will not hear your laugh

We will miss your passion for art

Those camping trips

Those art lessons

Always there with advice

Laughing out loud

We will miss you Mike

Forever remembered

Forever in our hearts.

Mrs Buss

I knew Mr Issitt as both a parent of one of my sons in his class quite a few years ago and then in a professional manner. I will particularly remember him for his great sense of humour! He will be hugely missed.

Miss Boyland

Mike was one of those people who was able to make you laugh with just a look. Equally, his ability to listen and make you feel cared for and appreciated was very special, too.

There are many, many Prince Rock children, past and present, who he inspired with his amazing artwork. He was passionate about making sure the children were able to express themselves creatively, boosting their confidence and celebrating their successes, no matter how big or small.

My favourite memory of Mike is watching him teach a lesson about the history of guitar music - another passion of his. The children were smiling, dancing and could not take their eyes off of him playing the electric guitar. Mr Issitt, the art teacher, was suddenly a rock star in his own classroom!

Mike was a huge part of what makes Prince Rock such a special place and it will never be the same without him.

We love you, Mike.

Miss Brimacombe

There will never be enough words to describe how truly phenomenal Mike was. He was a wonderful teacher, a fantastic role model and a caring friend. In particular, I will remember his cheeky facial expressions, the way in which he could tell a story just through his eyes and, of course, his brilliant sense of humour.

Many of my fond memories of Mike are full of laughter. One of my favourite memories was during a social gathering. Mike, with an ale in his hand and a captive audience, spent hours telling myself and our friends stories about his life. Wow - what an incredible and interesting life he lived! More than anything, I wish he had more time to add to his story.

Mike, you were one of the reasons why Prince Rock is so special. I feel truly honoured to have worked with you and to have been your friend.

I love you and I will always miss you.

Miss Down

One of my earliest memories of Mike was when he led the first staff meeting I attended at Prince Rock. As part of DT, he made his famous onion bhajis and lavender ice-cream. I remember it well as he said to me 'not all staff meetings are like this' which made me laugh. He was a fantastic teacher and his passion for Art and DT was clear to all. He will be sorely missed. Nicola Bennett

Mrs Bennett

Mike was one in a million, he exuded humility, kindness, gentleness, generosity, respect, humanity, charm, passion and insight. What he did for Prince Rock Primary School over the years was extraordinary and unique. How he managed to guide some of us to develop our creative skills in DT and cooking as well as to create some half decent art work took true talent and a lot of patience! He was a wonderful and talented teacher and truly cared about each and every child he taught, he was willing to go the extra mile to organise big events such as art exhibitions and camping trips because he knew those sorts of experiences are so important in a child's education. He was a brilliant colleague with a wicked sense of humour, but most of all he was my dear friend and I miss him so much.

Love Mia x

Mrs Watt

A message to one of the most honest, funny and sincere people I know. I am going to miss your laughter, funny comments and your sarcasm a lot! Most of all I will miss working on Playhouse. The frustration, energy and determination you showed to get it 'right on the night' but as always the kids pulled it out the bag and the look of pride in your face filled the theatre. You were a very good friend and a good man. Luan

Mrs Mitchell

Mike was not only one of the kindest and caring men I’ve met but his passion for art and teaching art to the children was incredible. I was lucky enough to work with Mike to produce two art exhibitions and he made me believe in myself and my art. I will be forever grateful for that experience. He was also one of the funniest people I’ve ever known and could have the whole staff room crying with laughter with his anecdotes. I will miss him dearly.

Miss Owen

Time may pass and fade away, but memories of you camping with the children and singing around the camp fire will stay with me, always and forever.

Will miss you greatly. Xxx

Mrs Whitney

I haven't known Mike for very long, but working with him in Year 3 has been lovely. He was such a kind, funny man, who I could tell was respected by everyone. His artwork was phenomenal and he loved telling me about his vegetable patch and the work he was going to do on it. It has come as a huge shock, but he was clearly well loved and had a love for the children as well. I hope he's at peace and I pray his family will find comfort in this difficult time.

Mr Allen

R.I.P, I will miss you lots, you were always one of my favourite teachers. And I will miss you so much.

Dear Prince Rock and Mr Issitt's family

We are very sad to hear the shocking news of Mr Issitt's passing.  He played a very important role in Erryn's education and she was very fond of him.  He brought out the best in her creative side and her love of all things art has primarily stemmed from him.  He spent quality time with Erryn and saw in her the creative flair and potential she has.

Erryn would love to mark this sad time with a picture which we will pass to you in due course.

Kindest regards

Karen, Adam and Erryn Turner

Mr Issitt made such a great impact on Coby this year. He taught him to enjoy art and would come home so proud of his art work he made with the help of Mr Issitt. He would come home with great happiness and talk about Mr Issitt and would say he was his favourite teacher!

Thank you Mr Issitt for being a part of my children's lives.

Rest in peace xx

Mike was such a dedicated teacher. Going on the camping residential with him last year was magical; singing songs while the sunset, with all of the children and staff joining in, transcended education. He was a gentle person but always spoke up for what he believed in. Mike was always there for me when I needed him and was a great friend. We will all miss him greatly. Goodnight, Mr Issitt x

I am deeply saddened to hear of the loss of one of the kindest, most giving people I’ve ever met. He was extremely talented and wise and spread his love of Art, Drama and Music to both the children and staff. I know he will be surely missed at Prince Rock. It was an absolute pleasure to work alongside him and I will never forget him. My thoughts are with everyone at Prince Rock and his family.

This is such tragic news.

Having worked closely with Mike for 7 of the 8 years that I have been at Prince Rock, I will remember him as a very kind, gentle and caring man who was very proud of his family. He had a knack for dropping witty comments into lessons and conversations when they were least expected!

The annual camping trip was always a highlight for both children and staff.

He will be much missed.

Mike - you really were one in a million.

You always showed great kindness, integrity and honesty in everything that you did, and the children you taught adored you. I am absolutely devastated to hear the news about Mike. My three years at Prince Rock wouldn't have been the same without his wicked and brilliant sense of humour. My fondest memories of Mike are three occasions we went camping with Year Three children. His ability to engage an audience of 50 children around a campfire with singing and humour was incredible. He was adored by staff, children and parents.

Thanks for the amazing memories Mike.

Mr Young

Mike, I don’t know where to begin. You were one of the greats, a true gentleman.

Our Prince Rock family has been left with a huge hole but we are so very lucky to have have known you as a friend and a colleague. I feel fortunate to look back on so many memories with laughter. Your sense of humour always brought happiness and laughter to the staff room and INSETs. Your INSETs will always be our favourite! Just sharing a snippet of your expertise in cooking, art and construction enriched and inspired us all. The pizza, onion bahjis and homemade ice cream were the best!

Thank you for you caring nature. I’m so grateful for all of the times you checked in and asked if I was ok. You were always genuine in your care for us and our wellbeing.

The children who you have taught over the years are so lucky in the experiences you gave him. You knew that there was so much for them to experience in the world and you tried to bring that to them through art, food and music. How lucky they are!

I hope you are enjoying some fabulous food and a pint right now!

All my love,

Sorry to hear about the passing of Mr Issitt, thoughts are with his family at this sad time.

Debbie, Ellie & Crystal Eggar

Mike was a creative teacher, whose enthusiasm for everything artistic has provided many opportunities for many children across the LAT family to know more about art and artists. He has left us, at Shakespeare, a legacy of and love of the works of Hundertwasser.  He was a trusted colleague taken too soon.

Our thoughts are with the family, friends, colleagues and pupils of Mike at this very sad time.

From the staff team at Shakespeare

Hi, I am Ethan Armstrong.

I was once a student at Prince Rock a few years back and am now in Year 12 at post 16. Although I left Prince Rock at the end of year 3, I left with fond memories of my years there and my final teacher being Mr. Issitt.

These earlier memories of my education are what got me through some difficult and crucial times in my life and especially with the memories of fun with  friends from Prince Rock. Mr Issitt went above and beyond as a teacher and will be missed by many more, my thoughts are with his family at this time.

My fondest memories are of a camping trip that he took our class on that I think I will never forget and that he made learning interesting as we studied a topic on the Vikings.

I left Prince Rock with words of inspiration and motivation thanks to Mr. Issitt discussing the future of Prince Rock which, at the time, made me extremely sad knowing I wasn't coming back to Prince rock that following year. He seemed genuinely unhappy to see me go but also gave me some great advice for the future and motivation to take life within my stride.

He will always be remembered as a caring, supporting teacher but I am sure he has enriched the lives of many before me and many after.

Thank you for reading this.

Ethan Armstrong

I learned of Mr Issitt through my son Ethan Armstrong, who was a former pupil of his. May I pass on my deepest condolences to his family and to staff and pupils at Prince Rock. He was a wonderful teacher and cared very much for his pupils. Whilst Ethan was a pupil of his I was a struggling single mum, and Mr Issitt seemed to take Ethan under his wing and was an inspiring teacher and role model for my son. Ethan especially remembers going on one of the camping trips that Mr Issitt arranged. Mr Issitt will always be remembered and missed by many.

Again I send my condolences to all of the Price Rock Family.

Samantha Middleton

Mike - You were such a kind and funny man, I will miss your funny stories and jokes, you always knew how to make me laugh. My fondest memory of you is sitting on the stage with the year 3 children playing on your guitar, sharing the songs with us that you sang whilst camping.

You will be missed greatly,

Hi there, I shared the incredibly sad news about Mr Issitt and Daisy wrote some of her own words, she loves art and artists thanks to Mr Issitt sparking a passion in her for creating, these are the words she wrote:

Dear Mr Issitt’s family, I cant explain how devastated I am and my friends feel the same way to. I am so sorry for your loss and I think it might help to say he had the best life he could’ve have. He was amazing, kind, helpful, smart, extremely talented and most of all EPIC! Mr Issitt is and will always be my favourite teacher with his kindness but also his cool strictness! Me and my friend liked that about Mr Issitt. He was so cool! And once again I am so sorry for your loss, I don’t know how your feeling but I know it must not feel good. But I do know that you must be amazing people to especially because you knew Mr Issitt, r.i.p.

In loving memory of Mr Issitt. He was an amazing art teacher, he didn’t like the sound of ‘good enough’ only ‘excellent’. He taught countless number of pupils – not just art and drama, but every other lesson too. He taught lots of year groups alongside his main subjects. It is devastating to hear of his passing. His heart may not be beating but he is still within ours. Rest in peace, Phoebe Burns, Prince Rock pupil 2013 - 2019

In the short few years I have known Mike he has been nothing but funny, genuine and supportive. He always took a genuine interest and was fantastic to talk to and hear stories from. No one else could make the staff room erupt in laughter like him and that will be something we all miss dearly.

No question was too big for Mike and he showed such incredible passion in everything he did. I especially enjoyed my time attending DT meetings with Mike, when I would be typing at the speed of light as he shared mountains of knowledge with us all and he would simply say “did you get all of that”.

The world is a darker place without you, Mike.

You are dearly missed already.

My heart and thoughts go out to all family, friends and students Mr Issitt taught. Taught myself during year 4, in 2007-2008. Pleasure to of known him and to be taught by him. I know he was a high role model for my brother. Will always remember every parents evening telling my mum I am a lovely student but i am never quiet no matter where he put me in the room. Along with every art lesson he taught. Rest in peace, create art in the heavens.

To Mr Issetts family and colleagues.

It was so sad to hear of the loss of a much loved teacher, friend, and colleague. Kyle, caitlyn and Jacob are all sad at the loss of such a wonderful man. Kyle fondly remembers when Mr Issett couldnt cope with him giving him a sleepless night camping, and the way he encouraged him through his artwork.

I know that there will be a huge void at the school following his passing. Just remember he was well loved and respected by so many.

Kind thoughts and loving wishes,

Jacob, Caitlyn, Kyle & Nicola Keight-thompson

Mike, dear Mike.

We worked together on many challenging afternoons. I remember when you first arrived, when I didn't know you, when I thought you didn't have what it took to manage some of our wonderful children. How wrong I was.

How quickly those afternoons became fun and laughter saw us through. I watched how the children started to take to you and how we all enjoyed our afternoons.  You were one of the best. One of the kindest, funniest people I've been blessed to meet. Sleep tight lovely. You will be missed.

I worked with Mike for many years, he had a wicked sense of humour,  he always made us laugh. His relationship with Mrs Butchers and Mrs Pomeroy was a very special one. He made the best ice cream, and onion Bhajis. The children loved  it when he made pizzas in the playground on many of the special celebrations that Prince rock held.  He organised a cook off between myself, and Mrs Hanley against him and Mr Spry which was loved by staff, children and parents. He was a very special person who managed to make everyday a fun day for the children of Prince Rock, they will miss him terribly. My heart goes out to his family at this very sad time

Such sad news today on hearing of the news of mr Issitt!

Jack had many memories with you, the first was the camping trip in year 3! When he got back he was so happy and the highlight was singing around the camp fire!

The art classes you took with the children which inspired them so much so that we now have countless art  pictures Jack painted framed around our home!

But the one specific memory Jack remembers is playhouse production! How you got these group of children to perform such a wonderful play that not only left us parents (and teachers) in awe of them but built there confidence up and help them be the lovely confident children are today!

Thoughts are with everybody at prince rock primary school and to mr Issitt's family.

Mike wasn’t just my colleague, he was my friend. At school, we were a team and I felt so much stronger as a teacher and as an artist because of him. His wealth of knowledge and experience amazed me and his ability to tell a story ensured the time we spent together was filled with lots of deep-belly laughter.

I have so many memories of time spent with Mike. Some with a beer in hand, others filled with creative experiences. Pieces of art was created with him, pieces of drama was created with him. Our involvement with the Theatre Royal and The Playhouse Project was certainly one of the most rewarding projects we ever did. We both strongly believed in the transformative powers of drama and saw first hand the amazing affect drama had on our children’s confidence. It was such an honour when we were shortlisted for teacher team of the year  (for arts and drama) in 2016 at the national TES awards because of our work together.

He touched the lives of so many children. It was a privilege to know him. Words cannot convey the hole that is left behind. Rest in peace, Mike xxx

He made us laugh so much on training days, and his ice creams and sorbets were always a delicious ending to many a staff buffet!

The pizza oven pizza's and cheese twizzles were always a delight, and many a year 3 child has benefitted from the annual camping trip, a memory they will keep forever.

I will miss our chats, and demands for AA batteries, for the latest DT lesson, or sketch books for the art lessons.

Rest in peace Mike, I will miss you.

Mike,

It's hard to find words today but memories of you are easy to recall! You were such a kind, honest and generous person who was always ready with a hug and a smile. You had a wicked sense of humour which would always brighten up everyone's day. Your INSET sessions were the best! From working down at the allotment, painting murals for the community or cooking delicious pizzas or your legendary onion bhajis it was always a pleasure when it was your turn to share your insight and wisdom - thank you Mike. Your creativity and passion for the arts was infectious and inspirational, passion which you shared and used to inspire hundreds of Prince Rock children through the years.

You will be forever missed but you will always remain in our hearts and thoughts. It was an honour to have known you Mike.

Lots of love to you and your family my friend

Mike - it's hard to know where to start but I can only say that Prince Rock, its children and families will miss you so very much and the hole that you have left behind will be impossible to fill. Emmie and Holly were both so very lucky to have had you as their teacher and as a family we owe you a lot. As a friend and work colleague, I can think of so many things that will always remind me of you - ice cream certainly was one of them! All I can say is that I will forever be grateful for times you have made us all laugh so much our faces hurt! Mr Issitt, you were one in a million and I miss you. Goodbye, Mike. Love Lucy

Sad to hear the news of Mr issitts passing. Mr issitt taught me in various classes and I also went to his art club. He was a kind teacher. I have a fond memory of nodding off in a lesson he wasn't cross just asked if I was with them. R. I. P

Where can i start? A man with a sense of humor, survivalist knowledge and a great cook!

it's going to be hard knowing your no longer with us, i remember back in 2010-2011 you made pizza in the furnace and i remembered it tasted very good. i remember the time in the old art room you taught us how to make weird and wonderful african designs made out of stones and glass.

Michael, it's been a real pleasure being in your class and experience your presence. rest well my friend.

Mike, I felt so priviledged to meet and work with someone so passionate about and engaged in arts. I always relished our conversations about all things creative and admired your skill and drive to pull together various projects and exhibitions in school and beyond.  You made me laugh, a lot (and especially in the staffroom) you were kind, generous, fun and considered. I always feel lucky to work at and with Prince Rock and you are one of the characters that made such work a real pleasure. Who knows how many crazy dances, whispered Christmas play lines and full on art projects we collaborated on. I loved going to Art Weekender with you and the children. I loved your crazy shirts at work socials, I loved you buying me a large glass of red at a staff do...because you were that sort of person, kindness poured from you and I know that everyone who worked with you and all the children that you taught and I will miss you greatly, Gem x

I consider myself extremely lucky to have been mentored by Mike as a trainee teacher. My memories of him are his wicked sense of humour, his amazing artistic talents and his absolute determination to see all children succeed. His absence will undoubtedly leave a huge hole in the Prince Rock community. I thank him for providing such a warm welcome to teaching in his classroom. RIP Mike x

Mike, or Michael if you were being a little cheeky! You touched the hearts of so many people.  Your kindness, passion and love for life sparkled.  I know you will always have a special place in my heart.  That sparkle in your eye and cheeky grin will remain with me forever.

There are so many memories I have of the years we spent together and for that makes choosing one difficult.  If I have to pick, it will be the time we took year 6 to Sibleyback Lake camping.  It was a beautiful place.  It was that night we shared a tent - boy did that send tongues wagging!

Hello,

My name is Heather. Mr Issitt taught me at Prince Rock Primary while I attended from 2001-2007. I am deeply saddened by the news and wish all the best for his family.

I have so many great memories of Mike and his lessons! I attended the art club and cooking club he ran where we always had a laugh! He was the kindest man who always believed you were capable of more, and he was of course always right! He pushed me to be a braver and more confident person, giving me a big role in the Alice in Wonderland play we performed in the Theatre Royal (despite missing many of my lines).

It was such a pleasure to be taught by him, I will never forget his kind heart and encouraging words! He will be greatly missed by all!

When Mike spoke, people listened.  Either because he was going to say something very worthy and profound, or something very funny!

I have so many memories of this wonderful, special man.  From DT staff meetings filled with onion bhajis and egg-box monsters, to nights out filled with stories and laughs.  Mike talked with passion and love about the things that mattered to him, and he listened with genuine interest when people talked to him.  He was a man who cared.

Everywhere you look around Prince Rock you can see things that have happened because of Mike.  But it’s not just the things you can see – he supported, nurtured and inspired.  He made a real, purposeful, valuable impact.

Mr Issitt was without a doubt one of my favourite teachers throughout primary. I will always remember his good sense of humour and how his eyes lit up whenever it came to doing art in the old art rooms, doing a production or singing a song to us all.

I will forever remember the camping trip he took us on in year 3 and all the songs we would sing no matter how ridiculous, or the production of ‘Baghdad Zoo’ in year 5 where he was a big help too. The clay sculptures being made in the art room or the pizzas we got to make in the outdoor kitchen. He was also a massive help with my brothers accident in year 6 and me and my family will forever be thankful towards him for that.

It truly was a pleasure to have been taught by such an amazing man who was there throughout my whole primary school experience. This has really made me think about what a big impact he had on me and when I didn’t get things right he would always tell me not to give up. We were all very shocked and saddened by the news of Mr Issets passing. Harry especially, who knew Mr Isset more. He has written a tribute to be shared.

Mr Isset was an excellent artist. He taught us fun lessons. Like how to draw lollipop trees and 3D cups. He inspired me to become an artist too. When we went camping in Year 3, Mr Isset played the guitar and we all got to make up our own funny campfire songs.

I will never forget all of my fun lessons with him. (Harry Brown 4M)

To all the staff at Prince Rock,

I am so sorry to hear about the sad loss of Mr Issitt, I can’t imagine how you are all feeling but I know that you are a strong team and will all come together to celebrate the life of such a wonderful man when you are able to. I have spoken to Austin and Phoebe about it and we have written a little message to go on the tribute page. Stay safe, Maddie xx

Mike,

I knew you from working at the school and as a parent. You were a wonderful man, a brilliant teacher and an inspirational artist. You were always full of humour and I am lucky to have tried your delicious Ice cream! You inspired my children to love Art even more and will always be a part of our memories of Prince Rock Primary School.

Austin said “I loved Mr Issitt’s art lessons – he was amazing! He took us on our camping trip and he sang songs around the fire, he made it so much fun! He helped us with Playhouse making sure we all knew what we were doing! He was brilliant!”

Phoebe said “Mr Issitt was really good at Art and a really good teacher!”

Our thoughts go out to your family and friends at this sad and difficult time. You will be sorely missed but never forgotten. Rest in peace.

On Layla’s first day of school Mollie thought that she had seen Santa at Layla’s new school. He heard her so Layla quickly went and found out that his name was actually Mr Issitt and that even though he had a scary beard he was nice and friendly.

Mollie fondly remembers him smiling while they were swimming as the kids danced in the water.

Layla remembers her art therapy session which Mr Issitt complimented and made her feel like a star!!!

A lovely man who has left a lasting impression on both the girls school journey!!!

RIP to a special man!!! 💓

Mr Issitt was always one of the best teachers. He felt more like a friend than a teacher. Any time you felt worried or upset you could go to him and always come back smiling.

Three years ago in year three he took us camping out near the woods. There were all sorts of activities you could do but my favourite by far was singing around the campfire with him and my friends.

Another major thing we did was art with him. From boats to dragons we always had a good time whether we were painting, colouring or even drawing.

From the moment I found out this solemn news I was upset and I send his family sad condolences at this deplorable time.
Raluca Paun

So terribly sorry to hear the sad news about Mr Issitt. He inspired such enthusiasm for art in the children - what a special legacy to leave behind.

Rachel Smith (parent)

Mr Issitt was one of the best artists I’ve seen. He was a great teacher who taught many children how to draw. I remember many amazing lessons that I had with Mr Issitt.

Max Smith (pupil)

Mr Issitt was one of the best teachers ever. He was amazing at art and drama and so much more. I have nothing but fond memories of him. He helped my class with Playhouse and the leavers play, he taught me about Hunderwasser and Quentin Blake. My favourite memory with him was when we went to see Princess Anne on the Hoe when I won an art competition. We’ll all miss him.

Scarlett Smith (ex pupil)

Mike didn’t just teach the children, he taught me an awful lot too.

I remember being a nervous first year student teacher sitting in a sunny art room observing Mike teach for the first time. Effortlessly he had all the children engrossed in their colour mixing, teaching them the technicalities of holding a paintbrush correctly with patience. Before I knew it we had thirty little artists in the room with us – it was beautiful. I remember thinking to myself that’s the kind of art teacher I want to be.

I was then fortunate enough to become his colleague where he showed me that as much as I could stress over the small stuff, nothing would be as impactful or memorable as losing yourself in doing something you love or getting out and experiencing things.

I always felt like you believed in me and I feel incredibly lucky to have learnt so much about life from you.

I will miss our laughs terribly and think of you always.

As everyone says, there's so much to say but how to put in words?

Mike was the kindest of gents, thoughtful & attuned to others' needs, wonderful & much loved. He made the time for children & staff who may have found school or life difficult at times. He went the extra mile in his own style of teaching which benefited so many. Then there was always the camping! I truly loved him for going out of his way to help the children who needed him most...he got it, he always did. I admired him greatly for this.

Mike was happiest helping those to succeed at the arts & in activities outside the classroom. He has created so many artists, what a legacy!

Mike just as easily would dissolve a staff meeting into raucous laughter with a quick-witted , simplest of comments or a double entendre to lift everyone's spirits. He would light up a room with his humour, his smile & twinkle in his eye. He could also party with the best, giving us numerous stories & treasured memories. I hope you always have a pint in hand & your feet up Mike.

A light may have gone out here but there is a star in the sky with his name on it, shining brightly for us all.

Night night Mike xx

When 3C had Mr Issitt for our supply teacher because Miss Cummings had a poorly thumb we where looking forward to do art with him because we all knew he was really good at art. We did lots of practice art with him for example, 3d shapes, painting, drawing and oil pastels art. He told us that even some artists get some things wrong some artists are so good you wont believe they get things wrong. When i first saw him i knew he wasn’t strict, mean and he didn’t shout that much either. So he was more a friend than a teacher. Everybody loved him for his amazing art and also for his caring heart. Mr Issitt was my most favourite teacher and he taught me so much during my time at Prince Rock. From teaching me how to play chess for hours, to helping me improve my art skills massively, he was simply the best. He was always so kind and always

knew how to make everyone laugh. The year 3 camping trip with him was the best. For most of us it was our first times away from home but he made sure we were safe. He taught us songs around the campfire whilst eating marshmellows. He was just such an amazing teacher with a kind heart. He will forever be remembered.

It is absolutely gutting to hear that you have gone but you will live on in the memories of those you have inspired in so many ways and in the joy, laughter and kindness you spread to those you interacted with. I didn't know you well but you were always kind. The children loved your art lessons and you will not be forgotten.

I keep thinking about Mike.. In random funny moments; like how he had us in fits with his wicked sense of humour at our Christmas party.

His determination with Playhouse in year 4 & his art lessons...they were my favourite. In these I always wanted to join in & learn alongside the children rather than support! I felt inspired!

I keep thinking of a time when he gave me 'constructive criticism'.. At the time it irked me - now I wonder why, it makes me laugh & I think fair play, you were right!

Mike was not afraid to speak out. He was quick witted, kind & funny. Such a loss for many.

RIP to a treasured man.

Dearest Mike,

What a special person you were, talented, hilarious, caring, considerate and much more.

I remember when we planned lessons together, they were always enjoyable. Your expertise in Art and DT was invaluable, you would always share your ideas and skills with me for the benefit of the children in both our classes. If something was difficult you would show me the easiest way to overcome the problem especially in DT.

You would talk about your family and how proud you were of them, you obviously loved them with all your heart.

It was a delight to teach along side you, thank you for being ‘you’.

Love always to you and your super family. Barbs x

Mike – it is unbelievably sad to have to say goodbye.  You were a great teacher, so fantastically talented in so many areas.  We will miss your jokes and sense of humour, your stories and amazing ideas.  Prince Rock is so beautiful because of the art works that it contains that you not only created yourself but taught the children to create.  The world will be much sadder and duller now without you to add colour and laughter to it.   Love Ruth xx

We are saddened to hear of the passing of Mike.  We would like to offer our condolences to you and the whole family at Prince Rock.  He was an extraordinary teacher whom we will never forget, imparting his artistic knowledge and dry sense of humour.  He was part of what made our placement at Prince Rock so enjoyable.

We reminisced this morning about his enjoyment in creating the plant pots and mentioned Mike’s passion towards the play, the children were lucky to have him as their class teacher.

Mike was a funny, kind-hearted character who had the best intentions of the children in his heart. We will never forget him singing the Grandma Rap on one of our first days at the school. Making us laugh and showing the passion he had for music and drama. We really connected with him through that and he, too, taught us a great deal.

He is a truly unforgettable teacher and one who we will never forget throughout out careers. If there is any sort of tribute to him when schools go back, we would love to attend and pay our respects to show our appreciation for him.

We are both saddened by the unfortunate passing of Mike, we hope that you are staying safe and in good spirits.

Mike was one of the nicest people I have ever met.

It was a true honour to call him my friend.

We shared several interests - mainly a love of history, woodwork and of course good beer

Everyone knows what an incredibly talented Artist Mike was, but the thing I’ll remember most about him was his absolute ability to lift the spirits of all those around him every single day.

Prince Rock will be a smaller place without you.

Goodbye for now my friend, just remember to flash St Peter that wicked grin of yours.

Mike taught here in our village in Yorkshire before moving to Devon. We remember him as a neighbour, friend and teacher to our daughters. He was a funny man who loved his work and was loved in return by many, many children. He was so creative and knew what mattered in life. He was committed to all good things. He'll be greatly missed. Condolences to Fran, Rosie, his brother John, and also to his colleagues and pupils at Prince Rock. Simon, Lyn, Jude, Ruth and Neil Sweeney,  Sheriff Hutton, North Yorkshire.

To everyone at PR

I read the news of Mike's sad passing today. I was heartbroken at the news and my thoughts and sympathies are with all of the staff and children at Prince Rock as well as his family and other friends.

Only being at PR for a year, I didn't know Mike well until we worked together on some bits for the play at the Theatre Royal and then away at the Year 3 camp. He was a kind, generous, dry-humoured and principled person. It was obvious how much he loved being with the children and being at PR. I'm sure you will miss him enormously. I will remember him very fondly.

Sending you all much love,

Jeremy

When a colleague succumbs to this virus it brings it very close to home how vulnerable we all are.

Our thoughts are with the Prince Rock school community and Mr Issitt's family.

Rest In Peace, Sir.

Mike, as someone who was trying to dispel the rumours that you were the real Santa, wearing a bright red jumper on a regular basis possibly wasn't going to work!

With one flash of that smile and a raise of an eyebrow you would have us giggling like kids.

A deeply caring man with an honesty we all admired.

You will be missed by all who knew you.

On behalf of the Theatre Royal Plymouth, particularly the Engagement and Learning and Technical Departments, I’d like to say how profoundly sad we are at the loss of Mike.  Many colleagues have worked closely with Mike over the many years of Prince Rock’s involvement with our Playhouse project and enjoyed his great energy, commitment and enthusiasm to the children, drama and the arts.  One member of the team said, “He was a real character. There will be a giant Mike-shaped hole left in a lot of people’s lives.” This sums up how all current (and ex) colleagues feel. We send our condolences and very best wishes to Mike’s family and the school community.

Mike was a kind, gentle and funny man who was also a wonderful teacher who really cared about every child he taught. It was a pleasure to have worked with him at Prince Rock.

My thoughts are with Francis and Rosie and I hope they can take comfort in knowing how much he was loved and respected by all who knew him.

Mike was an incredible man. I worked with him for my apprenticeship at Prince rock and had few interactions with him, but the ones I did were amazing, funny! He cared for every student with his incredibly kind heart and had a smile across his face every time I saw him, as-well as inspiring students, he inspired me. To become a better person and follow my dreams and help others the way he has. He had such interesting stories that I found it hard not to talk to him and he gave me advice when I needed it to follow my dreams to become a teacher. I always found he was such a talented man across all areas. My thoughts and prayers go out towards his wife and daughter he will be deeply missed.

Mike, Mr Issitt - one of a kind! A truly wonderful man, who without him, I would not be where I am today. Many years ago, when I embarked on my teaching career, I walked through the doors of Prince Rock and into your classroom as a student. Young, naive and ready for a challenge, you welcomed me with open arms and showed me how rewarding a career teaching will be. You showed me that it was not only important to support children in their learning but to support them in becoming well-rounded, good-humoured individuals, making them ready for the next stage, in their education, in their lives. Your humour shone through in the classroom and this ignited a friendship I won’t forget.

To echo others’ memories of Mike, his DT and Art skills were incredible. To this day, and forever more, I will be in awe of how he was able to help children create masterpieces. Mine and Mike’s classrooms were on opposite sides of the corridor and I always remember walking out of my room and being greeted by his class’ artwork - what a privilege to see!

I hope you know how much of an impact you had on all the children that you taught and the difference you made to their lives. Above anything else, you always told me that the reason you teach is for the children; to make a difference to the children; to make them happy. You certainly did that! I remind myself of this regularly when facing challenges in my own classroom.

After leaving Prince Rock in 2016, we did not see each other as often, but when we did meet, Mike would always show genuine interest in how I am and ask after my family. Family meant so much to MIke; he spoke so highly of his family and I know that his passing will forever leave a hole in the Prince Rock Family’s heart but he, without a shadow of a doubt, made a lasting impression on me and I am sure for those that ever had the pleasure of knowing him.

Mike, thank you for giving me the excellent foundations to my career, for always making me laugh and for always reminding me of the reason for teaching.

Once a Prince Rocker, always a Prince Rocker! You will be missed!

Much love,

Paul

Mr Kowalski

I was the School Caretaker at Prince Rock for 9 years until 2012 and enjoyed working with Mike to build some box planters for the children at the allotments in Embankment Road.  He took the children there to teach them about planting and growing and was really enthusiastic about the whole project.  He was an excellent teacher and will be sorely missed.  Rest in peace Mike.  My heart goes out to your family.

Mr Issitt was the kindest, funniest teacher you could ever meet. He was more than just a teacher to most students, including myself, and he helped me become the person I am today. Everyone will greatly miss him, and I am so thankful for everything he has done for me. He was the best teacher you could ask for and he will always be in our hearts. RIP Mr Issitt.

Dear Prince Rock, We have been so saddened to hear about the passing of Mr Issitt.

Seren has had such happy stories to tell of him, and his time with Class 3C. She has talked of how much she loves all of his pictures that are on the walls around the school, and clearly has some happy memories of doing her own art work with him too. Thank you Mr Issitt, we will miss you.

We are sending our love and thoughts to Mr Issitt’s family, and the Prince Rock staff.

From Seren, Saira and Andi Adams.

We send our condolences and best wishes to our colleagues at Prince Rock and Mike's family at this incredibly sad time.

Mike was a talented and dedicated teacher. His love and enthusiasm for creativity will always have a long lasting impact on our schools. Mike was the inspiration behind our 'Building Bridges' exhibition - one of our founding Trust activities. It not only encouraged our schools to engage with art, but also allowed our staff to collaborate and work together.

Great teachers are hard to find. Thank you for the inspiration Mike. You will be missed, but your legacy will go on!

I was so sad to hear the news. It was a pleasure to have worked with you when I was a TA at Prince Rock. I have many happy memories of you especially when you made us laugh on training days. Although, my favourite memory is the Year 3 camping trip; when you played the guitar and sang around the camp fire while we all ate marshmallows.

RIP Mike xx

Dear all at Prince Rock,

I wanted to send my sincere condolences on the sad loss of Mike Issitt.

I would be grateful if this could be passed on to Simon Spry if possible.

I had the privilege to travel to Cape Town with Mike and Simon as part of a project linking Plymouth schools to Cape Town schools. Mike was such a wonderful man to get to know, so funny and always kept us entertained on the trip. I cannot help but laugh when I remember his reaction in the Friday afternoon staff meeting when we were told we had to massage each other! His face was a picture, and one that Simon managed to capture in the attached photo.

Even the way I heard this sad news is a testament to the man that Mike was. My friend grew up and lives in North Yorkshire. She messaged me to tell me her "absolute legend of a Year 5 teacher" from Sheriff Hutton school in 1996 had passed away. She had no idea of my connection to Mike, but was so saddened by the news she wanted to share what an inspiration he had been, all that time ago.

I am so sorry for the loss you are all facing, Mike was really something special. You were all so lucky to have him.

Judith Harris (Judith Rich back then Simon!)
