Tribute to the wonderful teacher, colleague and friend – Michael Issitt
It is with great sadness that I am writing to tell you that our colleague – Michael Issitt – has passed away. Mr Issitt had been suffering with Covid-19 and although medical workers did all that they could to support him, he has sadly died. Our thoughts are with his family at this tragic time.
We know that many children may want to have a way of saying ‘goodbye’ to Mr. Issitt and there are so many ways to do this that are personal and meaningful whilst still observing current guidelines about your safety and that of others. Please email your tributes to with your tribute and we will upload it for you. This will become a permanent and lasting tribute for Mr Issitt’s family and the whole school community. When the school re-opens, we will have a celebration of Mr. Issitt’s life as a school family.

“ | Mike Issitt – An absolute legend I first met Mike just over 16 years ago when I arrived at Prince Rock as headteacher and I gave him a permanent full time contract. I will always fondly remember Mike for food, Art & DT and cows in Cape Town! His staff Insets were legendary and aside from showing us how to teach Art and DT properly, we also learnt how to make onion bhajis, pizza and ice cream! Mike’s amazing ‘tree art’ adorned the fences of the school for many years and this alongside his leadership of drama and regular work with the ‘Theatre Royal Playhouse Project’ earned him and Amanda a place in the final of the TES ‘Art and Drama Team of the Year’. He should have won!! Mike was also absolutely central to all three of Prince Rock’s outstanding Ofsted inspection successes, but his leadership of the 2012 DT inspection really was something special. No matter what wonders he performed in the classroom, Mike’s guitar playing in assembly and his leading the year 3 camping trips will remain in our children’s memories for ever. I was lucky enough to spend a week with Mike in Cape Town, South Africa in our linked school a few years ago. My favourite memory of Mike involves him stepping in to teach a class of year 10 and 11 secondary pupils how to model with clay superbly, while a herd of cows walked past the classroom with Table Mountain in the background! “ | Mr Issitt was my favourite teacher – he was always kind and made us all laugh a lot. I enjoyed doing lots of art with him, especially where we painted reflections of towns in water. He also took us camping in Year 3. His ability to tell a tale, his wicked grin, his incredible artistic talent and his colourful jumpers are but a few of the wonderful things that made Mike so unique. There are many Prince Rock children, past and present, who have benefitted profoundly from his teaching. My fondest memory is of Mike stood proudly in an art gallery following the completion of his masters degree. “ | Hi, I am Ethan Armstrong. I was once a student at Prince Rock a few years back and am now in Year 12 at post 16. Although I left Prince Rock at the end of year 3, I left with fond memories of my years there and my final teacher being Mr. Issitt. These earlier memories of my education are what got me through some difficult and crucial times in my life and especially with the memories of fun with friends from Prince Rock. Mr Issitt went above and beyond as a teacher and will be missed by many more, my thoughts are with his family at this time. My fondest memories are of a camping trip that he took our class on that I think I will never forget and that he made learning interesting as we studied a topic on the Vikings. I left Prince Rock with words of inspiration and motivation thanks to Mr. Issitt discussing the future of Prince Rock which, at the time, made me extremely sad knowing I wasn't coming back to Prince rock that following year. He seemed genuinely unhappy to see me go but also gave me some great advice for the future and motivation to take life within my stride. “ | I learned of Mr Issitt through my son Ethan Armstrong, who was a former pupil of his. May I pass on my deepest condolences to his family and to staff and pupils at Prince Rock. He was a wonderful teacher and cared very much for his pupils. Whilst Ethan was a pupil of his I was a struggling single mum, and Mr Issitt seemed to take Ethan under his wing and was an inspiring teacher and role model for my son. “ | In the short few years I have known Mike he has been nothing but funny, genuine and supportive. He always took a genuine interest and was fantastic to talk to and hear stories from. No one else could make the staff room erupt in laughter like him and that will be something we all miss dearly. No question was too big for Mike and he showed such incredible passion in everything he did. “ | Mike wasn’t just my colleague, he was my friend. At school, we were a team and I felt so much stronger as a teacher and as an artist because of him. His wealth of knowledge and experience amazed me and his ability to tell a story ensured the time we spent together was filled with lots of deep-belly laughter. I have so many memories of time spent with Mike. Some with a beer in hand, others filled with creative experiences. Pieces of art was created with him, pieces of drama was created with him. Our involvement with the Theatre Royal and The Playhouse Project was certainly one of the most rewarding projects we ever did. “ | A quiet, unassuming man, whose passion for art was passed to the pupils he taught, the results of which still adorn the walls at Prince Rock Primary School. He made us laugh so much on training days, and his ice creams and sorbets were always a delicious ending to many a staff buffet! The pizza oven pizza's and cheese twizzles were always a delight, and many a year 3 child has benefitted from the annual camping trip, a memory they will keep forever. I will always remember his good sense of humour and how his eyes lit up whenever it came to doing art in the old art rooms, doing a production or singing a song to us all. I will forever remember the camping trip he took us on in year 3 and all the songs we would sing no matter how ridiculous, or the production of ‘Baghdad Zoo’ in year 5 where he was a big help too. The clay sculptures being made in the art room or the pizzas we got to make in the outdoor kitchen. He was also a massive help with my brothers accident in year 6 and me and my family will forever be thankful towards him for that. It truly was a pleasure to have been taught by such an amazing man who was there throughout my whole primary school experience. This has really made me think about what a big impact he had on me and when I didn’t get things right he would always tell me not to give up. Its hard processing you are no longer with us but you have touched everyone’s heart who has ever had the pleasure to have met you, you will forever be in our hearts, gone but never forgotten. “ | On Layla’s first day of school Mollie thought that she had seen Santa at Layla’s new school. He heard her so Layla quickly went and found out that his name was actually Mr Issitt and that even though he had a scary beard he was nice and friendly. Mollie fondly remembers him smiling while they were swimming as the kids danced in the water. Layla remembers her art therapy session which Mr Issitt complimented and made her feel like a star!!! Three years ago in year three he took us camping out near the woods. There were all sorts of activities you could do but my favourite by far was singing around the campfire with him and my friends. “ | Mike didn’t just teach the children, he taught me an awful lot too. I remember being a nervous first year student teacher sitting in a sunny art room observing Mike teach for the first time. Effortlessly he had all the children engrossed in their colour mixing, teaching them the technicalities of holding a paintbrush correctly with patience. Before I knew it we had thirty little artists in the room with us – it was beautiful. I remember thinking to myself that’s the kind of art teacher I want to be. I was then fortunate enough to become his colleague where he showed me that as much as I could stress over the small stuff, nothing would be as impactful or memorable as losing yourself in doing something you love or getting out and experiencing things. “ | As everyone says, there's so much to say but how to put in words? Mike was the kindest of gents, thoughtful & attuned to others' needs, wonderful & much loved. He made the time for children & staff who may have found school or life difficult at times. He went the extra mile in his own style of teaching which benefited so many. Then there was always the camping! I truly loved him for going out of his way to help the children who needed him most...he got it, he always did. I admired him greatly for this. Mike was happiest helping those to succeed at the arts & in activities outside the classroom. He has created so many artists, what a legacy! “ | When 3C had Mr Issitt for our supply teacher because Miss Cummings had a poorly thumb we where looking forward to do art with him because we all knew he was really good at art. We did lots of practice art with him for example, 3d shapes, painting, drawing and oil pastels art. He told us that even some artists get some things wrong some artists are so good you wont believe they get things wrong. When i first saw him i knew he wasn’t strict, mean and he didn’t shout

The year 3 camping trip with him was the best. For most of us it was our first times away from home but he made sure we were safe. He taught
us songs around the campfire whilst eating marshmellows. He was just such an amazing teacher with a kind heart. He will forever be remembered. |

His determination with Playhouse in year 4 & his art lessons...they were my favourite. In these I always wanted to join in & learn alongside the children rather than support! I felt inspired! I keep thinking of a time when he gave me 'constructive criticism'.. At the time it irked me - now I wonder why, it makes me laugh & I think fair play, you were right! “ | Dearest Mike, What a special person you were, talented, hilarious, caring, considerate and much more. I remember when we planned lessons together, they were always enjoyable. Your expertise in Art and DT was invaluable, you would always share your ideas and skills with me for the benefit of the children in both our classes. If something was difficult you would show me the easiest way to overcome the problem especially in DT. You would talk about your family and how proud you were of them, you obviously loved them with all your heart. It was a delight to teach along side you, thank you for being ‘you’. He was an extraordinary teacher whom we will never forget, imparting his artistic knowledge and dry sense of humour. He was part of what made our placement at Prince Rock so enjoyable. We reminisced this morning about his enjoyment in creating the plant pots and mentioned Mike’s passion towards the play, the children were lucky to have him as their class teacher. Mike was a funny, kind-hearted character who had the best intentions of the children in his heart. We will never forget him singing the Grandma Rap on one of our first days at the school. Making us laugh and showing the passion he had for music and drama. We really connected with him through that and he, too, taught us a great deal. He is a truly unforgettable teacher and one who we will never forget throughout out careers. If there is any sort of tribute to him when schools go back, we would love to attend and pay our respects to show our appreciation for him. I was heartbroken at the news and my thoughts and sympathies are with all of the staff and children at Prince Rock as well as his family and other friends. Only being at PR for a year, I didn't know Mike well until we worked together on some bits for the play at the Theatre Royal and then away at the Year 3 camp. He was a kind, generous, dry-humoured and principled person. It was obvious how much he loved being with the children and being at PR. I'm sure you will miss him enormously. He cared for every student with his incredibly kind heart and had a smile across his face every time I saw him, as-well as inspiring students, he inspired me. “ | Mike, Mr Issitt - one of a kind! A truly wonderful man, who without him, I would not be where I am today. Many years ago, when I embarked on my teaching career, I walked through the doors of Prince Rock and into your classroom as a student. Young, naive and ready for a challenge, you welcomed me with open arms and showed me how rewarding a career teaching will be. You showed me that it was not only important to support children in their learning but to support them in becoming well-rounded, good-humoured individuals, making them ready for the next stage, in their education, in their lives. Your humour shone through in the classroom and this ignited a friendship I won’t forget. To echo others’ memories of Mike, his DT and Art skills were incredible. To this day, and forever more, I will be in awe of how he was able to help children create masterpieces. Mine and Mike’s classrooms were on opposite sides of the corridor and I always remember walking out of my room and being greeted by his class’ artwork - what a privilege to see! I hope you know how much of an impact you had on all the children that you taught and the difference you made to their lives. Above anything else, you always told me that the reason you teach is for the children; to make a difference to the children; to make them happy. You certainly did that! I remind myself of this regularly when facing challenges in my own classroom. After leaving Prince Rock in 2016, we did not see each other as often, but when we did meet, Mike would always show genuine interest in how I am and ask after my family. Family meant so much to MIke; he spoke so highly of his family and I know that his passing will forever leave a hole in the Prince Rock Family’s heart but he, without a shadow of a doubt, made a lasting impression on me and I am sure for those that ever had the pleasure of knowing him. Mike, thank you for giving me the excellent foundations to my career, for always making me laugh and for always reminding me of the reason for teaching. Once a Prince Rocker, always a Prince Rocker! “ | I was the School Caretaker at Prince Rock for 9 years until 2012 and enjoyed working with Mike to build some box planters for the children at the allotments in Embankment Road. He took the children there to teach them about planting and growing and was really enthusiastic about the whole project. He was an excellent teacher and will be sorely missed. Rest in peace Mike. “ | Dear all at Prince Rock, I wanted to send my sincere condolences on the sad loss of Mike Issitt. I would be grateful if this could be passed on to Simon Spry if possible. I had the privilege to travel to Cape Town with Mike and Simon as part of a project linking Plymouth schools to Cape Town schools. Mike was such a wonderful man to get to know, so funny and always kept us entertained on the trip. I cannot help but laugh when I remember his reaction in the Friday afternoon staff meeting when we were told we had to massage each other! His face was a picture, and one that Simon managed to capture in the attached photo. Even the way I heard this sad news is a testament to the man that Mike was. My friend grew up and lives in North Yorkshire. She messaged me to tell me her "absolute legend of a Year 5 teacher" from Sheriff Hutton school in 1996 had passed away. She had no idea of my connection to Mike, but was so saddened by the news she wanted to share what an inspiration he had been, all that time ago.
