What does it mean that God is faithful? When we say God is faithful it means He is completely trustworthy, He is perfectly faithful. The prophet Isaiah wrote: "O LORD, you are my God; I will exalt you and praise your name, for in perfect faithfulness you have done marvelous things, things planned long ago" (Isaiah 25:1).
Because God is faithful, we can always rely on and trust in Him. God's faithfulness means He will never abandon us even if we deny Him. As long as we're alive, we always have an opportunity to repent for sins and return to the Lord in faith.

Some people think that God created the world and then walked away from it all, leaving us to fend for ourselves (a belief called Deism). In this belief system, the logical conclusion is to doubt God’s faithfulness.
Think of a child who spins a top and lets it spin out of control, only to crash into the wall, teeter, totter, and ultimately fall. God did not do this with his cosmos – no, He is intimately concerned with its well-being.
We often think of this word cosmos (κόσμος) as meaning the earth, but that is not the meaning of it in a very popular verse, John 3:16. “For God so loved the world (κόσμος) that He gave His only begotten son, that WHOSOEVER believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
God sent His son to die for all the people on the earth – not the earth itself. Mankind is considered God’s cosmos. Thus, God interacts with and cares for His creation!
The idea of an aloof God is the opposite of what we see in the Bible. Instead, we see a God that’s interested in every detail, including the number of hairs on our head (Luke 12:7). What a relief!

How God is faithful
Now let’s take a few moments to reflect on all these Scriptures. The bible assures us of God’s faithfulness time and time again. This means that when life gets hard, we mess up, we sin – He is still there, loving us.
God is still faithful when:
- I’m ungrateful for the blessings He’s given
- I put other desires above Him
- I forget to pray/study my Bible
- I’m struggling with temptation or sin
- I doubt His goodness or even His existence
God’s faithfulness is one of the things I’m most grateful for in my Christian life, because only He knows how much I mess up. But He continually loves me and wants me anyway. It’s mind-boggling.
The blessing is, I do not have to trust my mind concerning God’s faithfulness. I have irrefutable evidence of it in the Bible.
What does the Bible Say About God’s Promises?
God’s faithfulness comes down to the fact that God keeps His promises. Do a search on God’s promises in the Bible, and you will be overwhelmed by its theme. One example in the Bible of God’s faithfulness is Abraham.
God promises Abraham that through his line all the earth would be blessed and instructs him to leave where he was and go to a place He would tell him. That place became known as the Promised Land.
In the same way, God is faithful to us because He stays true to His promises. God always holds up His end of the deal. “The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance” (2 Peter 3:9).
This passage shows that God has faith in us, but we must return the faith to Him. “And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him” (Hebrews 11:6).
What does it mean to be faithful?
What does it really mean to be faithful? We can hear about God’s promises and that is all well and good, but do we really believe them? After all, many other promises are made and easily broken.
This promise may sound familiar to you: “Do you promise to honor and cherish, in sickness and in health, for richer or for poorer as long as you both shall live?” The response is always a resounding, “I do!”
But sadly, this promise often turns to “I did.” The change of heart and mind can come because someone was unfaithful in the vow, changing the agreement. This happens so much that it changes our understanding of the word “faithful” or the word “promise.”
This is why we question when God makes promises and don’t realize the significance of showing true faithfulness. Thankfully God isn’t an erring human and He always keeps his word, no matter what.
Is there a difference between having faith and being faithful?
I can say I have faith but not live a faithful life to God. I can posses faith but keep it to myself and not share it with others.
Being truly faithful is putting your faith (belief) into action. Letting your faith work for you. Not works of merit, but works of obedience. By not living a faithful life, my faith quite literally does not work. James explains this:
What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!
(James 2:14-19)
A demon has faith because he believes and even trembles as a result of that belief. But a demon, by definition, will not obey — therefore, will not live a faithful life.
If I can have faith without works of obedience, I sound an awful lot like the demons. We show the faith we possess by the faithful actions we perform!
And that’s how we truly know that God is faithful, too – by His actions. He doesn’t leave us all alone – He sent Jesus for salvation and the Holy Spirit as a constant companion.
