Also known as “The ‘Burg”, Downtown St. Petersburg has an interesting cityscape. On the waterfront, you’ll see luxurious yachts parked in the marina, and jet skis playing in the Tampa Bay. As the sun goes down, the Majestic Art Deco buildings and trippy design of the Dali Museum mingle with palm trees and bar lights for an ethereal skyline. This is where the young and the young-in-spirit go to experience the St. Petersburg party scene. Every First Friday, Central Avenue is barricaded for live music and revelry in the street. Afterwards, the party moves into local bars and live music venues, such as the Vintage Ultra Lounge and Jannus Live. On saturdays, locals wake up bright and early for fresh-baked bites at the St. Petersburg Saturday Morning Market. Chefs and bakers handout tasty samples to Market patrons, while local farmers show off their bounty of homegrown fruits and veggies. Throughout the year, there are tons of street fairs, festivals and downtown events, including the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. In fact, if you’re lucky, you may just score a sweet apartment overlooking the course that runs down Bayshore Drive.
Old Northeast
For a more laid-back vibe, venture north of downtown in to the Old Northeast St. Petersburg neighborhood. Here, the people live in historic Mediterranean-style homes and apartments, some of which are haunted, and some of which are just really old and creaky. There are some great hidden treasures in this neighborhood, such as the farmhouse-turned-gastropub, Three Birds Tavern. The Fourth Street Shrimp Store provides a steady supply of fresh fish and shrimp for home-cooked meals, and the St. Petersburg Saturday Morning Market is just a hop and a skip away. If you’re looking for something to do, check out the waterfront parks, the Sunken Gardens, and the Flamingo Sports Bar. As the legend goes, Jack Kerouac had his last drink at this local bar, so be sure to stop by the Flamingo on “Jack Kerouac Night”, when there’s usually a great band playing in honor of his ghost.
Historic Kenwood
Open minds and creative tastes live in this historic St. Petersburg neighborhood. Bungalows, craftsman homes and Renaissance-style architecture house a variety of cafes, ethnic eats, art galleries and bars. Nitally’s serves up Thai-Mex fusion food. Pom Pom’s Teahouse & Sandwicheria makes a mean Yellow Curry Chicken Sandwich, and is outfitted in mismatched chandeliers and multi-colored walls. Locals love Bandit Coffee for breakfast, and are known to have a glass of Sangria for lunch at Casita Taqueria. For late-night shenanigans, check out The Queens Head or Punky’s Bar and Grill.
Old Southeast
On the Old Southeast side of St. Petersburg, vintage homes and shady palm trees line the streets, where you’ll see people riding out to Lassing Park with their crabbing gear, or up to the USF St. Petersburg campus for class. One of the best burger spots is located here, a little eatery known as Chattaway that has been serving up American fare since the 1930’s.
Crossroads Area
Located near St. Petersburg College and the Treasure Island Causeway, the Crossroads area is a convenient location for students. There is a wide variety of rentals here, including both cheap apartments and luxury apartments. In this St. Petersburg neighborhood, you’ll have quick access to St. Pete’s Beach, as well as some prime fishing spots in the Boca Ciega Bay.
Greater Pinellas Point
Located on the southern tip of St. Petersburg, Greater Pinellas Point is a fishing paradise. Throw a pole in the water at Maximo Park or Pinellas Point Park. Talk to Captain Dan (of Capt. Dan Malzone Fishing Charter) and he’ll take you out in his boat and show you just where to cast the line. Or, head over the Howard Frankland Bridge to Skyway Fishing Pier State Park and marvel at the world’s longest pier, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
