Can you eat gummy vitamins with braces

I was very lucky to receive some products to review and share with readers for this week's Back to School party.  One jumped out at me right away, since it is something I've been looking for since my oldest child got braces last year.  The excellent folks at Reichheld Ting Orthodontics let us know that kids with braces need to avoid very chewy foods such as gummies, since it can lead to a wire popping out or, even worse, a bracket coming loose.  Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to find a children's vitamin that is not in gummy form.  In fact, I had no luck finding an alternative, so Ben has been carefully chewing his gummy vitamins, with fingers crossed.

It sounds lame but I really was so excited when I saw that one of sponsor items was a box of alternaVites Kids powdered children's vitamins!  alternaVites Kids are a complete children's vitamin (for children 4 and up) that comes in two flavors, Strawberry Bubble Gum and Raspberry Cotton Candy.  Each day's dosage is in a separate easy-tear pack, which are sold in a box of 30. Children can sprinkle the powder on their tongues or it can be mixed into yogurt, pudding or a smoothie, sprinkled on fruit, licked off a spoon, etc.  We tried mixing it with juice one day, but that didn't work well since it didn't dissolve totally, so I'd recommend sticking with something thicker, like yogurt or a smoothie.

I don't know how alternaVites did it, but the Kids vitamins are amazing -- a complete source of multivitamins and minerals yet they have 0 grams of sugar, no artificial sweeteners or high fructose corn syrup, no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives, and they taste good!  Ben likes the taste, how easy it is to take, and the novelty of sprinkling it on his tongue, like a pixie stick.  He likes how portable it is too -- he can easily grab a pack to take to school, if he runs out of time in the morning.  alternaVites thought of everything; the vitamins are also certified kosher, vegetarian and, for parents dealing with food allergies, alternaVites Kids do not contain egg, milk, peanut, tree nuts, wheat, soy, fish or shellfish.

Ben has at least 15 more months of braces and then years with retainers, and it looks like my 2nd child is heading towards braces soon, so I will definitely be an alternaVites Kids user for years to come.  They are sold at Whole Foods Markets, independent health food retailers, and also online at Walgreens.com, Drugstore.com, VitaminShoppe.com, and other vitamin retailers.  alternaVites also has a $2 off in-store coupon available on their website.

If your child doesn't like the taste or texture of gummy vitamins, or you're looking to change up your kids' vitamin routine, or you simply want to switch to a children's complete vitamin that won't stick to their teeth, alternaVites Kids is a great option.  They also offer an adult formula if you have challenges with vitamins and would like to try to mix them into food.  Learn more at www.alternavites.com.

I received complimentary products for the purpose of this review.  All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

I didn't have braces and honestly just did not think it through as far as diet. Help. He gets most of his nutrition via gummy. Can anyone recommend a palatable non-gummy chewable multi-vitamin and non-gummy chewable Vitamin D/Calcium supplement?

I was super strict about no gummies when the braces first went on. He eats them, and gummy candy now, and has never had an issue. He just needs to brush well later.

Crunchy French bread, though, has removed a bracket more than once.

My kids took gummy vitamins with braces. I have braces now too, and take gummies as well. They needed the vitamins and wouldn’t swallow the pills, so I just decided we would take the risk. Like PP, my kids lost brackets here and there from hard foods but the gummies were fine. It’s not like they’ll be eating a bag a day. I wouldn’t sweat it.

One or two gummy vitamins a day will be fine. Just tell him to be careful.

My braces kid still eats plenty of gummy stuff. The brackets that have fallen off are the ones around the molars where her bite is changing. They have to put blue stuff on her teeth to keep her from being able to fully bite down because they fully recognize that she's biting on the bracket through no fault of her own.

Learn how to make a good smoothie. Throw plenty of spinach or greens in and plenty of fruit to make it palatable.

Soft gummies like the vitamins will likely be fine. He'll just need to brush well.

The real problems are with super sticky gummies, like taffy or other stiff chewy candies. Those can really stick on the braces or pull brackets off.

We do the same...the dose is 2 of each for a child 4 and up. What are you confused about?

I cut them into a few pieces with kitchen scissors, and then kiddo with braces can suck on them and swallow them easily. So far so good. Also, using a an electric toothbrush and a Waterpik helps get whatever residual goo out of the braces. Proxabrushes help too: //www.riteaid.com/shop/gum-proxabrush-go-betweens-interdental-brushes-moderate-10-ct We buy the medium width, but lots of choices. Last year they were a big help to have in pockets at school to floss quickly in the bathroom if needed.
