Updated on October 20th, 2022 by Colin McCormick: With Halloween nearly here, fans are likely looking for plenty of horror movies to get them in the spooky mood. Netflix has a lot of great new offerings this time of the year, from big hits to overlooked gems. And if fans are having trouble deciding which of them to check out, they can always have a look at the IMDb scores for some guidance.

10/10 Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark (2019) - 6.2

Guillermo Del Toro is an exciting name to see attached to any horror movie and it is particularly intriguing given the nostalgia attached to this title. Based on the beloved yet terrifying children's book, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark follows a group of young friends who accidentally unlock a host of creepy threats when reading a book of scary stories.

There are some who felt the movie was hampered by its PG-13 rating and failed to deliver the scares they were hoping for. But it still has plenty of great creature designs and creepy fun to enjoy.

9/10 Fear Street: Part One 1994 (2021) - 6.2

The Netflix original movie Fear Street: Part One - 1994 kicked off a trilogy of terrific new horror movies that paid homage to various stories within the genre, from creepy supernatural stuff to some terrifying modern horror movie slashers.

The first installment, taking place in the 1990s is not only the logical place to start but also delivers a fun ride. While the other installments might be better according to some fans, the likable characters, subverting of tropes, and grisly death scenes are worth it.

8/10 The Ritual (2018) - 6.2

Given the massive library of movies, great horror movies like The Ritual can sometimes get buried on Netflix. The movie follows a group of friends on a hiking trip who find themselves in a forest being stalked by an evil force.

The movie carries a dark and ominous tone throughout which is very effective. But when the creepiness starts to take over the story, things escalate in shocking ways while giving fans some truly creative and terrifying movie monsters.

7/10 Creep (2015) - 6.3

While many fans might expect supernatural elements or masked killers in their horror movies, Creep proves such things are not needed for a truly unsettling movie. The found footage movie follows a videographer who takes a job recording the last days of a dying man only for the subject to make things very uncomfortable.

The movie makes the audience squirm with awkward social situations and a bizarre villain at its center. And the fact that they are just waiting for things to turn even worse gives real tension to the tale.

6/10 The Babysitter (2017) - 6.4

Getting a lot of good scares out of a horror movie is fun, but it can be a real treat when those are combined with laughs. The Babysitteris an under-seen horror-comedy that could provide a lot of fun for audiences this Halloween season.

The movie centers around a young boy who discovers that his babysitter is part of a satanic cult, putting him in the middle of their deadly plans. With broad characters, bloody kills, and a terrific villainous role from Samara Weaving, The Babysitter is hugely entertaining.

5/10 His House (2020) - 6.5

One of the more recent Netflix horror offerings, His House is an acclaimed and creepy ghost story. It follows a refugee couple trying to make do with the dismal housing they have been given only to find an evil spirit within their new home.

It is a horror movie some fans had trouble finishing due to its real-life horror elements as well as the supernatural ones. It makes for a terrifying and powerful horror gem that more people should seek out.

4/10 Gerald's Game (2017) - 6.5

There are a number of iconic horror movies based on Stephen King's stories, but Gerald's Game is one of the most underrated. It follows a married couple experiencing trouble in their relationship. As they seek to reignite their spark, something unexpected happens, putting the wife in a fight for her life.

What seems like a simple yet chilling setup is made a gripping ride from beginning to end with great performances, unexpected elements, and one of the most disturbing scenes in recent horror movie memory.

3/10 Hush (2016) - 6.6

For years, the home invasion horror movie has been a big part of the genre. Hush adds an interesting twist to the trend as it focuses on a deaf woman who is targeted in her secluded home by a masked killer.

There are a number of excellent elements to this movie all working together to deliver something special. From the tense sequences to the intimidating villain to the badass hero, it is a movie that will have the audience on edge, jumping in horror, and also cheering.

2/10 It Follows (2015) - 6.8

The modern genre masterpiece It Follows creates one of the scariest horror movie curses ever seen. It tells the story of a young woman who, after having sex with a man, is cursed to be targeted by an evil entity that stalks her endlessly, killing her if she is ever caught.

Such a unique idea is used brilliantly in this nerve-wracking movie. The simple image of the entity disguised as a regular person slowly walking toward its victim is surprisingly creepy and gives the audience an inescapable sense of threat.

1/10 It (2017) - 7.3

Another Stephen King adaptation, It brings one of the writer's most iconic villains to life. It follows a group of young outcast kids who form a bond while being terrorized by an evil force that appears in the form of a terrifying clown named Pennywise.

Though the sequel features some big names like Bill Hader and Jessica Chastain, the story focusing on young kids is seen as the better movie. The dynamic between the young characters is a lot of fun and Pennywise is cemented as a truly iconic horror movie villain.
